The WinCo where I shop keeps a lot of staples, like rice, beans, flour and spices, in bins. I was short of bay leaves so I filled up a small baggie with a couple of tongs worth, writing the appropriate number on the twist tie.

The check out lady had a problem, as the amount of bay leaves didn't weigh enough to register at her scale. After consulting with another cashier, she pressed the air out of the bag, which apparently worked.

When I got home I checked the receipt to see what she charged me for the bay leaves. Eight cents.

This handily beats my previous best, which was 43 cents worth of rosemary.

My son and I joke that a dish is ruined because it didn’t contain the called for bay leaves.
I’d bet 99/100 people could compare dishes side by side and not know if it had them or not.
There’s a bay leaf lobby out there somewhere. Haha

I confess to having no idea at all what they do. I put them in the dish because the recipe says so.

And that is why I grow herbs in my garden. I was in Rouses yesterday and looked at the large plastic containers of Sweet Basil and Oregano and they were over $13 and $11 respectively.

I have a bay leaf plant in a large container and will pick them fresh when needed and if someone wants some, I'll pull off several dozen leaves, dry them a few days on a table and then bag them up to give out.

They must spray them with some fragrance or something because I just checked on mine after buying them, probably about 1.5 years ago, and they are still very fragrant and pungent.

The flavor is easily recognizable of you cook a dish with and without them. It takes more than one or two though in a pot of beans or gumbo.

Bay leaves are so essential.

That said, I have a dna-level fear of failing to fish them out.

Then consuming one and it lacerates my esophagus from the inside.

Is that a thing? I’ve never heard anyone say this before.

my wife's mom, when she was growing up, made a game out of it and had a small prize for whoever found the Bay Leaf.

and Bay leaf in Gumbo makes it so much better IMHO

No. Bay leaves add a distinct taste, and anyone off the street could tell you that a dish cooked with them and one cooked without them taste different if they did a blind taste test.

I love Winco. If my town had a Winco it would put the local grocery stores out of business. They recently opened up a location an hour from me which I drive by now and again. I stop by on my way home and pick up meat and other things but always meat.
