If PI is called on that last play, what happens next?

The Refs advance the ball 15 yards closer to the Goal Line and Ole Miss gets one final un-timed football play, and that ends the game unless another Defensive Penalty is called, right?
It would play out like that, I think, but, I'm not as well versed in the rules as many others, so, I pose the question.
Thanks.

That is correct as far as I know. I'd bet Chambliss finds a way to score from that distance

The would get to the 20. Not much better honestly. Still a Hail Mary situation of sorts as Miami will load up at the goal line

If the line of scrimmage is outside the 15-yard line:
Ball is moved 15 yards forward
Automatic first down
If the line of scrimmage is inside the 15-yard line:
The ball is placed at the spot of the foul, which will be inside the end zone boundary, so the ball is placed at the 2-yard line (the NCAA’s standard enforcement spot for DPI in the end zone).

Because it was in the EZ, It would be first down at the 1.

No. That's the NFL rule.

It’s also a college rule if you’re inside the 15. Ole Miss would have had the ball at the 2 IF they were at the 15 (they weren’t) and they got the DPI

only if the line of scrimmage was within 15 yards of the end zone already.

Yes I know and it's already been posted in this thread. But that's not what he said.

You mean Ohio State getting screwed by the officials with 2 minutes left which is why the game went into overtime in the first place?

OK thanks.
So it would still be a "Hail Mary" situation from the 20 yard line. One untimed play from the 20 yard line. Sure, Chambliss is good enough to make that TD throw from the 20, but, since the Defense knows that it's the final play of the game barring Defense Penalty, they need not defend the whole field.
The No-Call is probably the right call. It would be a spectacle to allow a continuing series of Final Play Penalty Downs to continue until the TD is scored.
That would be a silly spectacle. The game must end at some point.

It was
In a hail Mary situation, it has to be a complete mugging or the contact so egregious that no choice is left but to throw a flag.

The spectacle would be if they allowed an obvious (DPI) to occur so they could avoid the game continuing on untimed downs.
This situation, keeping the flag in the pocket was the right call. Both players were hand fighting and jockeying for position. Ball was heading OOB, still catchable, and WR made a lunge to the ball. Appeared to be a little jersey grab there, but not enough to warrant the call without better ball placement

woulda coulda shoulda....they lost. beaten by the better team which was clear all nigh

quote:I disagree here big time. They kept talking about how they were both fighting. Eventually, yes. But go and watch the play again. The DB doesn't just have his hand inside his jersey, he pulls him down. I think if the ball is just a tiny bit underthrowm, they're calling that. I also think if it's just in the middle of the game and not a hail Mary, they're also calling that.
The No-Call is probably the right call.
