The wife (no pics) and I really enjoy non-fiction stuff. We have loved a lot of the things Nova has put out. We recently watched the Human series on Nova and the Ken Burns piece on the revolutionary war. We enjoyed both although I felt the first episode of the revolutionary piece was a bit slow.
Anyone have any favorites in the category. I searched and may have missed the topic so apologies.

Discovery Chanel won't shut up about their Pole to Pole seeries with Will Smith. They must have signed him to a two series deal because the Welcome to Earf series he did with them was terrible. Oh snap! That is a wild looking animal! David Attenborough he is not. Absolutely terrible choice. He cries at one point though.

If you're cool with watching a documentary outside of nature/history, give King of Kong a watch.
It came out 10 years ago, but it is still fantastic. Its about breaking the high score record on the original Donkey Kong arcade game.
Billy Mitchell is the greatest villain of all time.

I am more of a documentary guy.
Darkon. This is a great, fun watch about a group doing LARP back in the early 00s or 2010s. There is conflict both within and without.
Knuckle. My vote for the GOAT documentary. The basis is following caravanners (think Brad Pitt in Snatch) who have long-lasting familial disputes with bare knuckle boxing matches. They do VHS tapes and send to each other to talk shite before fights.
The Institute (2012). Kind of like the real life version of the movie The Game. This is about an alternate reality game in San Francisco.
The Ambassador (2011). Guy become a Liberian diplomat to show how people do this to create blood diamond mines somewhat legally.
Cleanflix. Mormons can't watch R-rated movies, so there are Mormon companies who edit movies to sanitize them of the sins. This follows one of the purveyors of this illegal operation.
Best of Enemies. Follows the debates at the 1968 Democratic National Convention between Gore Vidal and William F Buckley.
Machete Maidens Unleashed! (2011). Doc about cheap horror-action exploitation films made in the Philippines in the 60s and 70s.
Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014). Another movie doc, but this one about the crazy history of Canon Studios.
Three Stars. Inside look at how the Michelin guide works and behind the scenes of many top restaurants of the time.
Dogtown and Z Boys. This was made into a fictional movie a few years ago with Heath Ledger. This doc covers the history of how modern skateboarding came to be from a group of young surfers in the 70s and 80s.

quote:An odd case of someone making a doc and then turning around to do a biopic on the same subject. Peralta also used the same music in both films. Not sure if he still had the rights to those songs by those artists when he did the bio-pic, or if he just bought them all again.

Absolutely this, just know that the doc isn't super honest/accurate at times, and the records discussed in it are no longer valid/have been bested.
But it is top notch from an entertainment perspective.
I swear I had a good thread about docs, but I don't think I do (just my music docs thread).
But I did find an old list I made (from 2012) on here:
quote:
King of Kong - Donkey Kong/arcade records
Art of the Steal - Barnes collection
Bigger, Faster, Stronger* - steroids in sports
I.O.U. - U.S. debt
The Cove - dolphin killings in Japan
The Bridge - Golden Gate Bridge suicides
Night and Fog - Holocaust
Magic and Bird: A Courtship of Rivals - awesome doc about their relationship
Dear Zachary - completely fricked up, but hellishly interesting, about Andrew Bagby and the
102 Minutes That Changed America - 9/11
Waking Sleeping Beauty - Disney Animation's rise in the late 80s and 90s
Cocaine Cowboys - Miami drug shippers in the 80s
Jesus Camp - fricked up and honestly scary look at super religious people and their kids
Capturing the Friedmans - 80s child molestation case against the Friedmans
H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer
Obviously I'd have to add a ton more that I've seen in the last decade and a half. But I still stand by these suggestions too.

We really enjoy Aerial America on the Smithsonian channel. Not so much of a documentary, but still get interesting historic facts and views of each state.

I suspect that is right up my wife’s alley.

Aerial America is great. It also makes for fantastic background television. Love that show.

If you feel like laughing (a lot), check out Crunk On Earth. It's more of a mockumentory series based on world history. Highly recommend.

I love Jiro dreams of sushi.
I watched a documentary about couple months back about the Tonegawa Fish Market?? And Jiro had a cameo as just a guy buying sushi grade fish and I actually yelled at the TV, That's Jiro, and had to watch Dreams of Sushi again.
Can't remember the title but it's on Amazon.
ETA: it's Tsukiji Wonderland.

My list of suggested comic book related documentaries:
Comic Book Confidential: A time capsule of comic history as of the late 80's, with interviews of now deceased masters and the indie artists who created underground comics.
Crumb: Award winning insight on Robert Crumb and his bizarre brothers. A deep dive in a self-proclaimed weirdo genius artist.
Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection: Deep dive into the perfectionist artist who created The Rocketeer and brought Bettie Page back into pop culture.
Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters: A refreshing doc about a non-tortured artist who brought the tortured Hellboy to life. A well done documentary with no added fluff.
Selling Superman: An obsessed collector leaves his hoarder filled home full of comics to his wife and sons, the eldest brother sets out to sort and sell a massive collection that includes millions of dollars in comics, including Batman #1 and Superman #1. A lot of emotion as he deals with this massive gift from a neglectful father.
Drew Friedman: Vermeer of the Borscht Belt: Celebrity favorite Drew Friedman discusses his art, his obsession with old Jewish comedians, and his life as the son of a famous writer. His good friend Gilbert Godfried steals the show.
