Have you or anyone you know had a random seizure/epilepsy come on later in life?

I’m a younger man (28) and had a random onset of epilepsy at 24 that I’m still battling. In 2024 I had 8 grand mal seizures in 6 months (with no prior history).
Vitals, CT scans, MRI with contrast, tilt table all totally normal for a male my age with an athletic background and moderate exercise habits. Medication/supplementation is the only thing that mitigates it.
I have 2 friends (males of the same age) that also have had random episodes. For those of you who have experienced it, is this more common than people realize or do we just have back luck?

Yes. It's what helped them diagnose me with m.s.
My brain feels like its been stuck into a light socket.
Mine have been referred to as Paroxysmal attacks & they suck.

Not in the short term prior to the onset of symptoms. We drank heavy in high school & early college years 10 years ago.

Not any help to you… but my stepdad had some kind of seizure disorder come on when he was maybe about 26/27… can’t remember anything besides he was put on Dilantin.
It was scary as a kid- I still remember some of his episodes. They were the grand mal type.

Prayers for you man, I know it’s tough and frustrating to go through. My story was a little different. Mine started in 7th grade as focal seizures, multiple medication treatments didn’t fully help them as I still had 2-3 a week. My parents kept searching and searching and Vanderbilt was the place that helped take care of it my senior year of high school. Ended up being a benign tumor in my brain that was causing them. No issues since.
Really work to find a good neurologist.

Last year, at age 51, I started having seizures. The first two were mild episodes and I thought were just anxiety attacks. The third one was major and I had it while driving. Luckily, I didn’t hurt myself or anyone else. I went to the emergency room and had a CT which showed swelling on the right side of my brain. They thought I had had a stroke. The next day I had an MRI and it showed that I had two brain tumors. Both are benign meningiomas. I had surgery to remove the larger one which was causing the seizures. I’ve been fine ever since. I’ll probably have to take seizure meds for the rest of my life as a preventative but I haven’t had any seizures since the surgery.

My mother had her first seizure in her mid seventies. With her it was the initial symptom of alzheimers. Not to scare you, that almost certainly doesn't apply to you, but In the elderly, seizures and alzheimers/dementia are correlated. They think it has something to do with microvascular changes in the brain.

My wife had her first seizure at 42. We were actually in the Amazon jungle in Ecuador when she had the first one. Figured it was something weird there. Then it happened again 6 months later. She takes medication and it seems to have stopped it from happening it again.

A former LSU player, in his younger years, began having seizures, which were later diagnosed as epilepsy, at age 15. He started on medication to control it and was able to continue playing football.
He ended up playing 13 years in the NFL, one of the greatest to ever play the game.

My gf started getting them about 10 years ago. She's on meds to control them.

78 year old wife has vasilvaga syncope, she randomly faints. has to do with the automatous nerve that. controls blood flow to brain. rigidly controlling blood pressure, hydration, circulation, drugs etc keeps it manageable in the house. In the last 4 months, 7 doctor office visits and she fainted during 6 of them.

A fellow grad student came down with stress induced epilepsy the first year he was working on his PhD. The attacks kept coming and he ended up dropping out of the program for his health.

Wow. My worst fear is having one while driving, not even because of my own health but for the danger it puts other people in.
The potential for a frontal lobectomy was discussed as a last resort but only if medication were to fail. It’s been 14 months since my last one so we’re on the right track, definitely would like to avoid brain surgery good Lord willing. How was your recovery post op?

Never got one and only ever maybe had “COVID” once but didn’t get tested and felt better less than 24 hours later.
Unsurprisingly, that was only brought up by maybe 2 of the physicians, cardiologists, neurologists, etc that I’ve seen the past few years.

I’ve had a few occur later in the, but they were a result of my own bad choices.

My neighbor is is 71ish just got diagnosed. The seizures came out of nowhere.

I started having them in 6th grade after getting hit in the head with a baseball. Was wearing a retainer when I had the 1st one. My parents thought I was choking on it. Took anti-seizure meds until I was in my mid-sixties.
Was on Phenobarbital from 6th grade thru my freshman year of college. It kept me from having seizures but I felt like a zombie. Neurologist switched me to Dilantin and Tegretol after that.
When I was 34 I was diagnosed with the systemic type of Lupus. Both of the Dilantin & the Tegretol could cause medically induced Lupus, so they put me on Depakote. I hated that stuff. It made me so nervous I would grind my teeth trying to get to sleep at night. Plus it didn't control my seizures. I would get up and walk around when I had seizures on it. I woke up one morning wrapped lying in my bathtub, wrapped up in my shower curtain. Another night I broke out one of my bedroom windows. Was lucky not to fall from the second floor.
After still exhibiting Lupus symptoms six months later, they put me back on the Dilantin. I took the same dose of it until I was 65.
While in the hospital with pneumonia in December of 2024, my internist lowered the dose. The first time I went into him for a wellness checkup after that, he told me the level of the dose wasn't really enough to control seizures, and suggested getting off of it completely. It's been It's been about six months now and I've been seizure free. It may be the only thing health wise that's improved since I turned 60. I probably should have tried to get off of the meds in my 50's but I was scared to do it. All of my seizures were grand mal ones. They were no fun.
