In world war 2, I think it was common that every man on his feet on a ship that got torpedoed broke his ankles. I know that happened to a cruiser, and another Navy vet told me the same thing, but I suspect larger ships that might not happen.
A torpedo hit is devastating to a ship, and usually the men on them. Water is not compressible like air. That transmits a lot more force from the explosion to the structure of the vessel.
