My first experience with Carmax

Was shopping for a new car for the missus. Before we hit up dealerships, I got an online offer from Carmax for the vehicle we were trading in. Long story short, the dealer offered us for our trade-in $9.3K below what Carmax offered. I told them no, they came up 4 grand best and final, still $5.3K less than Carmax. Ended up purchasing a car from a dealer and driving over to Carmax and selling our trade-in. It was a pretty simple and painless process.

I did the same with Carvana and they even came and picked it up.

How is the title transferred over to Carnax and how do you get your money?

I read that initially as "my first experience with Carmex." I was about to comment "herpes?"

Carmax is usually a great option to trade, or least get a value on a vehicle, before heading to a dealership. I would never buy from Carmax, but would sell to them. With their nationwide network, they are willing to
pay good $, and send the vehicle to a “hot” market.

Bought my last car there, paid to the penny what it said I would online, only thing they tried to upsell me on was a warranty, but they weren’t pushy.

Same as any other trade in/sale. You sign sale papers, title and they cut you a check in house.

Carmax usually gives a little more but it nets out with taxes

They do not haggle and are slightly overpriced.

Carmax is great in non shithole/ Yankee towns.

Sold my Tahoe to Carmax back in 2022 during the height of used car prices sky rocketing and they offered about 7k more than any dealership I brought it by. Was a 2019 with about 35k miles on it and got about 3k less for it than what I originally paid in 2019. Would do businesss with Carmax again. Really easy process.

I have gotten over trade in value for 3 vehicles sold through carmax. Never had an issue.

Don't forget to put some of that sale aside for taxes my friend.

Used carmax to trade in a car recently. Gave me exactly what they said they would and was quick and easy.
Carvana on the other hand said they’d give me a certain amount and then when I showed up offered me several thousand less. It wasn’t a carvana office, but some guy at a Honda dealership representing Carvana who I could tell was going to be a squirrelly frick from the second I met him.

Others have asked the tax question ... you do realize that when you trade in, your sales tax is based on the differential after deducting the value of the trade in. This was not always the case in Louisiana -- and went into effect I think about 3 years ago ... point being you paid the full sales tax on the new car (9% in EBR I think). So we all hope you did those calculations before making your decision.

This law was in effect in 1994, the last year I was in the car business. It is not anything new, they just play with the numbers to screw people out of several thousand dollars. Only when the customer catches their lie, do they correct the sales tax..... Ask me how I know.
