The USA cannot unilaterally end the war in Iran. If the USA decided to end all bombing immediately, Iran likely still would not open Hormuz, nor would it agree to end hostilities against Israel, nor would Israel likely agree to end hostilities against Iran.

Trump can only escalate now. However, Trump lacks both the political equity or the military capability to prevent Iran from launching continuing attacks on Israel and allied Gulf States in the face of escalation.

This conflict is going to go on for a long time and energy prices in the US and around the world will continue to rise. Rising energy prices, over the long term, will cause serious economic disruption.

We have a very serious problem on our hands here. If only Trump had stayed true to his campaign promises.

We are in a never ending cycle. Why did we get mixed up in this mess in the first place. I say this as a Trump supporter.

Agreed. He has really painted himself into a corner with these countdown threats. Either he will claim "progress in negotiations" for the 37th time (even though Iran has apparently cut all communication) and he will look weak, or he will drastically escalate this situation and energy prices will become catastrophic for the global economy.

wow how fortunate you are to able to draw on your vast experience to make these kind of calls as according to your profile you live nowhere, have no interest, biography, age or occupation.

He should stop the threats.

However, we knew what was involved going in.

We knew we would have to send in ground troops for excursions such as seizing uranium and taking control of straits. Excursions not be confused with invasion and occupation.

Smart play is to seize those islands and give them back to UAE.

No you go in take the strait and hold it as a base and as a hostage. The economy dies with out passage we can create just as much disruption as the Iranians.
The new regime will play nice or the get nothing out or in .
These people only know and understand force.
This will become a carrot and stick operation much like the Panama Canal.
The leadership of Iran is a shell right now the people need to rise up and take it back from these death zealots

You sound like a bitch.

That's all I have to contribute to this whining of a thread.

Here's where it could get worse. People on this board talk about regime change as if it would be all hunky-dory, nice and neat, with a US-friendly government to replace it. Posters talk about arming the resistance...as if that could be done so easily.

What's more likely to happen of there is "regime change" is that there's a leadership vacuum. Rival factions...armed by us...vie for control. Civil War breaks out. We pick a side...the one we feel would be less crazy and more US friendly. We continue to provide them arms and logistical support. China and Russia support the other side, with former republican guards joining in. That side ultimately wins, the crazies are back in power, and ten years from now...or less...they're working on a bomb again and exporting terrorism and yelling death to America. Only this time the crazies had relatives that we killed in this conflict.

It was dumb for him to talking about ending a civilization and then end it with God bless the Iranian people. That will really win the hearts and push the people to revolt. Then if you actually take out their power and bridges they will be hardned against the US then.

Going after civilian targets that impact the Iranian people that we want to raise up and fight the regime is not a good plan.

I'm guessing the WH thought the people would want to overthrow the Ayatollahs after we came and knocked their capabilities out. I do not think it is a majority that wants to get rid of the Ayatollahs. There have been over 2 generations that grew up under this regime. It is what they know now. With the IRGC hanging on and the people not revolting, I don't think it was expected.
Or we were duped by Israel and CIA into doing this. Was the uprising spurred by the CIA and Mossad to give the US/Israel justification to go in since we supposedly destroyed their nuke program. Which apparenlty wasn't true.

I’m betting the guy who ALWAYS seems to come out on top of the pile has a plan.

But your concern is duly noted

You mean the "trap" he set for himself when he was given a 92% prediction by Intel/mil advisors that this exact scenario would occur?

That's not a trap. That's reckless insanity.

1. We aren't the only player there.

2 Even though our western allies are hands off, there are others who will get their hands dirty if need be.

3. Just today (4/7) Iran decided to pop off at Saudi Arabia.

4. SA doesn't have nukes but have stated they are interested in getting some if Iran ramps up.

5. In the past week or so Iran has also popped off on UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman.

6. Iran is funking up shipping for a lot of people.

7. Iran is/has slaughtered THOUSANDS of its own citizens.

8. They are picking a fight with two nuke armed countries as well as five other nations AND have dissenting factions within their own borders.

All will work out. Trump is not "trapped".

Trump doesnt have the cards.

When he snuck attack the Ayatollah (and his family, including children) and the regime did not fall, he ceded the leverage to Iran.

Iran has been in the superior strategic position ever since.
