Interesting question re:The Masters

My son and I are doing our periodic rewatch of the '86 Masters (as this year is the 40th anniversary). He posed a question which absolutely stumped me as well as intrigued me:
If Augusta National were to be placed on the market for sale (obviously, never going to happen), would it be worth as much as the Dallas Cowboys?
With The Masters tournament and all the licensing/merchandising a hypothetical new owner could take advantage of, it kind of makes you think.
If Augusta National were to be placed on the market for sale (obviously, never going to happen), would it be worth as much as the Dallas Cowboys?

The sale would be for far less than market but impossible to access

No
Obviously it’s the Holy Grail of golf, but it’s only relevant one weekend a year

You couldn't be more wrong. The membership book alone is worth billions. It includes presidents, politicians, celebrities, business moguls, etc.

Which is worth a lot more than 17 weekend shitty outcomes for tBoys.

So it’s like a Wikipedia page… the book may be worth billions but you don’t get the relationships.
We not gonna act like the Cowboys don’t have famous VIPs…
Plus with the Cowboys you get the stadium too so every other event there too

Augusta National is like the Mona Lisa. If it ever came up for sale, the price would be astronomical. You think a Saudi prince wouldn't cough up $15 billion to own ANGC and The Masters? In a heartbeat.

No one person "owns" Augusta National.
They would never sell, but if you could buy it, you'd own everything, including the people responsible for maintaining the membership book.

Not sure what the Cowboys are currently worth, but ANGC is said to be sitting on $500 million in real estate holdings outside the gates of the club itself. At least so says golf.com

I would think it would command north of $10B.

I say this as someone who grew up in Augusta...
There probably isn't a greater disparity in the world between the value of the onside property and the value of the neighboring offsite property.

You have a valid point. Especially going east and south

I liked the Masters more when it was popular, but not OVERLY popular.
Now Steve at the Water Cooler who knows nothing about golf is a golf expert 1 week out of the year so that he feels "cool" around other people...
It's lost its luster and has "sold out" in many ways to the main stream media..
I still enjoy it, but when Tiger isn't involved it is very...blah looking for storylines etc..

Augusta National has never made a cent on their TV deal. Yes, access and coverage has expanded over the years. Instead of CBS broadcasting the back nine in 2-3 hours of coverage on Sat & Sun, now ESPN and Amazon go full days on Thurs & Fri.
They leave $100M on the table each year by not selling out.

You’re talking both sides. You don’t like casual fans but you are also bored when Tiger doesnt play.

i have no idea of their worth but they must make a fortune in merchandise sales alone.

That is why I am very excited about this Masters. The two storylines that suck up all the attention were Rory and the career grand slam and what will Tiger do. Those are gone this year. The weather is going to be perfect for Augusta to be firm and fast. It is all about the golf this year.

Lol, at the irony (and stupidity) in this post.

It has the, "that place is too popular now, nobody goes there anymore", feel to it.

It's 100% true.
Sadly.
"Hey I'm Todd, look at me I'm wearing my Masters Quarter Zip"
When Todd never attended the Masters and also did not have anyone associated with Todd attend the Masters...
