Santa Maria - holy hell

I’m only recently getting back into golfing after a very, very long time and when I was younger, I only golfed at a small course in my hometown so forgive me here, I know I’m preaching to the choir based on what I see here. I went there a couple days ago and it was busy even on a Tuesday evening. That wasn’t really a problem, just an observation. What really bothered me a lot, though, was how incredibly rude the assholes behind us were. I was playing with my 11 year old son and these dickheads were probably in their late 20’s or early 30’s and were so impatient that they hit into us a handful of times. At one point my son and I were standing at our balls waiting on the guys ahead of us to play before we hit ours and suddenly we hear the sound of a ball landing near us and I see their ball is about 15 yards behind us! Ok, that’s an accident, I thought. I’ve over performed my own expectations before and accidentally hit close to the guys ahead of me before so no big deal.
Then it happened again while we’re on the green at #2. Were putting then suddenly someone’s ball lands near us again. At this point I turn and stare at them like “WTF”. They wave as if they have no idea what they’re doing is wrong.
Then while we’re putting on the next green, their ball lands near my cart. Now I’m fricking pissed and want to beat their arse because it’s no longer one off accidents and instead just blatant disregard for our safety. I look at them and throw up my arms again as if to say “WTF” and they just stared at me. I tell my son to stop hurrying and take his sweet time. He didn’t putt well at all so I tell him to drop his ball back where it previously was and putt all over again
. We get back to the cart and I’m petty and pissed so I ran over their ball, burying it into the ground. frick them.
They proceeded to hit into us one more time on #9. Between those guys and the slow fricks in front of us, never again at Santa Maria for me. I hope those guys got nails in all four tires on their way home.
I know I could’ve called the marshal but I didn’t want to cause more of a scene over it. Half of me was wondering where the frick he was anyway bc I’ve read here that peoples biggest complaint about that place is the marshal riding around constantly telling people to hurry up.
It was the least fun round of golf I can remember.

I find that weekday afternoon golf is generally when the worst and slowest people typically play munis and semi private courses. Not always the case, but was the weather improves, kids and hackers are more prevalent. Now, that’s no excuse. Good rule for any golfer: good or bad, play fast. Marshals are often MIA by these afternoon rounds too.

I don’t have much of a temper, but people hitting into me gets me fired up.
How was the course aside from that? I’ll be out there this weekend.

The course wasn’t terrible. It had some really nice spots and some pretty rough areas, but the greens do have some weeds like poa all over them right now. Honestly, I’d say it wasn’t anything to brag about, but I’ve played on worse courses before.

As you should have been. Hitting into you that many times while you have your young son with you would warrant an arse kicking or at least a confrontation. Glad to see you were ready to protect your son.

Honestly, people like this probably don’t know any better. I used to think they were all assholes too until I started “coaching” middle and high school golf at a low level of mostly newcomers.
These kids will hit directly into someone ahead of them, try and hit a ball over someone’s head, walk directly in line with the green while their playing partner is playing, or hit while the group ahead of the is walking off the green. I was standing next to a cart talking to my high school aged manager last week and a ball came head height right past my face and slammed into the cart she was sitting in, nobody even said fore or apologized.
These kids aren’t assholes, they legitimately don’t know what they’re doing until me or whoever is teaching them tells them it’s bad etiquette or unsafe or whatever, and then they start to play the right way. (They are also mostly very bad at golf so hit a lot of errant shots
)
What I’m saying is you don’t know what you don’t know, and with so many adults now who are new to golf, it’s likely no one in their life ever taught them basic golf etiquette when they were younger and they actually don’t know that what they are doing is rude or unsafe.

I do one of 2 things. Pick it up and take it with me or hit it back after the first time, or if it’s just blatant I don’t give 2nd chances.

Were you the guy that was looking for his putter with your kid in the cart? I was out there Tuesday afternoon as well playing with 2 randoms and the group in front of us was young kids. I'm thinking we were 2 groups behind you. If I would have known we could have hit into them a few times

It's one thing to hit into someone in the fairway. You think they are out of range and underestimate the club you picked. It can happen. Hitting into someone on the green is deliberate. That is the clear target of the shot. I am not sure what I would've done in that situation, but you were right to be furious.

Yeah I’m picking that ball up and taking it with me. On 9 I would have 3w and fired the one that landed near me back at them and the one I picked up for good measure. That’s fricking ridiculous

Not trying to deflect, but this is the fallout of marshals not doing their job further up the course. I find they tend to ignore the groups of 4-6 who slow down the whole course for everyone, typically because they're members or regulars and they're buddies with them.
I've golfed for over 20 years, including many muni courses, and pace of play and golf etiquette has never been as bad as it is now. Too many casuals who have no interest in learning the rules.

This is the worst time of year to play too, immediately following The Masters.
