Approximate bathtub/shower replacement cost?

We have one of those fiberglass inserts from the 80s in our bathroom. My wife and I are starting to look at getting it replaced. The only thing we need done is a new one installed along with a new valve/spigot/shower. I can handle demo of the old one myself since tearing shite up is something I have a lot of experience with.
The main reason I'm asking is because my wife had Re Bath come out and give us a quote. $22,000 and once they added discounts it was around $16,000. He adjusted the quote to include the cheapest options and it was $13,000. I said hell no and the dude seemed shocked that we didn't sign up for it right away. Is this price way out of left field or am I just underestimating how much this should cost? The Re Bath quote included demo and plumbing. This was only for the bathtub. No flooring, vanities, etc.

I just ripped out the exact same set up, i went with a soaker tub and tiled the walls. Changed the shower trim as I had put a new delta valve in less than a year ago. I demo'd everything. Cost me about $4K for labor to install new tub, prep walls and tile.

That's about what I expected for labor. This quote wasn't even for tile, they would just be gluing up some panels that look like tile. The only attractive thing about there quote was that it'd take 2 days for the whole thing.
Their big selling point that they kept pushing was the lifetime warranty. I was thinking I could probably replace the damn thing 2 or 3 times over for what they had quoted.

Have to put eyeballs on the actual job, but I would venture to say you can get that done for about half that quote. Real tiles, real tile guy. Probably 5 day job, less if you do the demo yourself.

Seems high for fiberglass mold shower.
Honestly, you can do the whole thing yourself. Go watch some youtube videos and see what's involved. Then decide if you want to take it on or not. Even the valve in the wall is a simple replacement.

It's just a basic one piece 30x60 insert in there now. Nothing crazy.

Doing that now. I wouldn't mind taking on the actual tub part myself but the plumbing is something I'd definitely have somebody else do. I don't mess with shite that could flood the house or electrocute me.

call Brett Mayeux at Mayeux Plumbing and tell him you are a personal friend of Chris Grand. He will hook you up.
ReBath charges what they do because they can do it quickly. If you are willing to have this take a week or two you can get it done for 5K or so all in.
It’s easier to get the FRP unit out in pieces, mask up and bust out the sawzall

Appreciate the rec, I'll give him a call soon. I don't mind it taking a week.

For sure, I'm always looking for excuses to bust out the Sawzall.

Following, interested in doing the same. Assuming Mayeaux Plumbing is in or around Baton Rouge? Would they handle everything or just do mainly plumbing work?

Speaking of electricity. I demo'd my shower also and it had electrical running through the walls behind it. Check it out before you start.

I definitely understand and had the same thought process as you. Then I received 2 plumbing bids for $1,200+ each. I watched vids and did some research until I was comfortable. I changed the shower valve and even added a 2nd valve for a handheld and diverter. It took me about 20 mins total and I've never done it before. Plumbers make bank..
I'm watching videos now, would still probably get a plumber to install the valve and tub but I could do the surround myself.
For shits and giggles I'm pricing the most expensive soaker tub and surround I can find. From home depot for Kohler tub, faucet/valves, drain/overflow, and surround it'd be right at $2300. I figure there'd be another 2-5 hundo in there for miscellaneous stuff. Makes me that much more aggravated with that re bath quote.

Rebath serves its purpose…one call install that goes quick and carries a warranty. Their biggest customer base is residential landlords and renovations at time of purchase for older homes. It’s a pretty great business model to be honest, franchised to local owners. I looked in to buying one at one point (highly profitable but you have to deal with genpop which I am pathologically unable to do)
Anyway, you can do it

I had a fiberglass stall insert removed, sheetrock fixed where it leaked, porcelain tile floor to ceiling. Material and labor was like $6500.

Reach out to Bath Fitter, they’re half the price of ReBath. They manufacture and install their own products. Lifetime warranty as well.
