SIAP, but:

A woman was injured last week when authorities believe she attempted to light a cigarette while driving a Chrysler Pacifica that was hauling a propane cylinder that, unbeknownst to her, was leaking, causing a massive explosion. The force of the blast was so significant that it literally blew the metal roof clean off of the Pacifica, as well as all the windows and doors, launching some components more than 100 feet away from the van, into the yards of nearby homes. Miraculously, the driver was okay.

That’s why you never hotbox and roll with the windows cracked

How did she not smell the propane?
quote:
Propane has ethyl mercaptan added to it so that you can smell if it's leaking, which stinks to high heaven if there is even a few PPM worth floating around, which would be far less than what is on display here. For this level of explosive power, in a closed vehicle, the concentration of rotten egg smell would have her retching violently and wholly unable to drive, let alone try to light a smoke. Something is fishy here, methinks.

Or not get hurt from a blast that literally blew the metal roof off?

I'd say it's more important to make sure you don't have a leaking fuel source

Good question. I smell propane pretty often in normal use of a gas grill. I've got to think that the lower explosive limit* of propane is far higher than the odor threshold. Speculation: maybe her smoking really diminished her sense of smell? Or maybe she was smoking something other than cigarettes, that interfered with her clear thinking and/or sensory perception?
*For those who don't MSDS and such, basically, the lowest airborne concentration where there's enough to explode.

She survived?!

I lost my sense of smell in 2014...completely. Can't even smell propane.
Many lost all or a portion of their olfactory senses due to good ol' covid.
It happens..
If I go camping by myself and carry propane in the vehicle my Klein gas sniffer is my best friend.

Yeah, I'd probably call that a miracle.

I'd love to see the forensics investigation on how the hell she came not only survived but was relatively ok. Look at that fkng van!

No! I said a Bud Light.

the explosion was actually very minor. The poor quality of modern cars makes this look much worse than it is.

They’re built that way to better absorb impact. They break apart around the occupants and not on them. They are exceedingly safer now than say 15 years ago.

The odor threshold for Ethyl Mercaptan is around 0.00035 ppm. The LEL of propane is 21,000 to 22,000 ppm. When monitoring for it, you typically set your detection limits to 10% of the LEL (around 2,100 ppm).
You should smell it long before you reach the LEL.
