P F Chang's Revenge

Perhaps the god of dining was seeking revenge on me for disrespecting P F Chang's recent victory in the Best of BR Dining survey in 225, because I had to eat dinner there last night. (Obviously it wasn't my choice, but I did have to pay for my meal.) I tried to minimize the pain by ordering from the appetizer menu during happy hour. The discount didn't help much. I ordered the chicken lettuce wraps, and the iceburg lettuce was the tastiest part. I loaded them with chili sauce and duck sauce, but still no flavor. I also ordered the dynamite shrimp, which were fried in tempura batter then tossed in a kind of buffalo wing sauce with hot mustard. The first one was kind of tasty, but they quickly became soggy and greasy, rendering them inedible- and I'm a person who considers it a sin to leave shrimp on a plate. I still have a funky metallic taste in my mouth that won't go away. MSG? Or just a really bad memory?

I never understood the love that people have for PF Changs. Even Hunan's today still have better chinese food than Chang's. Chang's is more of an asian/american fusion if you ask me.

Yea, I agree. Even Hunan's buffet is better. We also ordered spring rolls and lo mein. The best part of the meal was the free iced tea refills.

Picked up food to go from there the other day and it was solid. Not big on Chinese anyway. Was on a hour and 20 minute wait. People didn't care. I certainly would have not waited.
They must be doing something right. Very successful restaurant group.
Wish we had a solid Vietnamese choice around here. I miss Saigon over on State street.

Why has it become so popular to blindly bash MSG?

Hunan is picture menu chinese food. I don't have anything against it, used to eat there all the time, but it's not high end Chinese. I'll never understand the hate for PF Changs, it's good...especially for a chain.
I work with a guy from China...a Chinese national who has only lived in the country for like three years, whose wife barely speaks English, but is somehow in medical school Chinese guy. Now this isn't saying much, but I asked him what his favorite Chinese food in BR was, and he said PF Changs. If a Chinese guy likes it, it's good enough for me.

Never had a bad meal at PF Chang's at the Metairie location, and I have eaten there a number of times.

Mrs. Pimp love PF Chang long time !

PF Changs is living proof to the theory that you can't go broke making bland tasteless food for the chain-happy masses.

My 20 year old has a good paLate. He's been forced to eat there twice. He hates it. I won't eat there. I love Asian foods.

You prove a point I was about to make. You are simply a chain snob that makes ridiculous over generalizing statements like you did up there.
I bet most of the people that have spewed hate on Changs, generally have contempt for all chains which is just nonsense. Some are good some are bad but even the bad ones probably have decent food.
We can't all eat at freaking 5 star restaurants every night of the week.

Actually I'm not a food snob, and I don't have a general hate for chains. I was hoping that my friends would choose Zea's. I've had many fine meals at Ninfa's, and a few even at (gasp) Chili's. I just don't think Chang's is anywhere near the finest Asian in BR, despite the fact that their advertising bucks bought them the award in 225 Magazine. I happened to have had a particularly bad meal there last night, and I don't understand the 45 minute wait that people are willing to tolerate.

I like Chang's. Always good, always consistent.

Is Hunans really a picture menu? If it is, then something drastic must have happened. I ate there when they were on the corner of South Foster and Government many years ago. The food was great but my best Chinese food experience in Baton Rouge was when I was a senior at LSU and a group of us went to the Chinese Inn on Florida Blvd. That place was fantastic. Another fantastic Chinese restaurant in Baton Rouge was China Inn on the corner of Choctaw and Greenwell Springs Road. I miss all of the food back in La. and the best Chinese food here in Montgomery seems to be a buffet.
