Well, welcome to the board! As with any board, there are some folks here that are asshats, but most here are pretty good folks.

This kind of tradition is why Louisiana is so freaking cool. In California, the Sheriff would cite you for the illegal burning of materials along a waterway, Game Wardens would write you a ticket for endangering non-native river dwelling species through use of fire, the Coastal Commission would fine you for pollution for any ashes that drifted into the river, Harbor Patrol would ticket you for interfering with navigable vessels through use of incendiary light producing devices, and Customs and Border patrol would fine you for burning wood that could be used to create housing for illegal immigrants. AND you could never signal Santa Claus because it would be insensitive to people from other countries that don't celebrate Christmas....

Mostly on the East Bank of the MS from Reserve to Convent. If your are on the River Road in Lutcher between 5:30 and 10 you will be in a traffic jam, try to avoid it. My advice is to go a day early to look at them. Everyone will be out putting the finishing touches on them and most will let you take pics next to them and what not if you want. Then try to find a spot to watch them go up at 7PM on Christmas Eve. Its something to see at least once. It gets very smoky and loud (lots of people put 1000s of dollars of firecrackers on them). Some people shoot off some fireworks on the batture as well.

I went to help my brother in law one year in Gramercy..... ended up building the whole damn thing almost by myself. Fat arse couldn't get out of his own way. I found out quick you need a shite ton of wood to make one of them.

Sure do, your eyes are bigger than your stomach is a good analogy. We use to build them 26+ feet, but you find out who your friends really are and how lazy each one is.

I live pretty much where they begin. Never built one myself. Bonfire season overlaps with hunting season so it's a deal breaker for me. Ive been to the festival when I was younger, but I haven't been in a long time.
