Dog Reaction to Trifexis - non Pit Bull Related

I gave my dog her monthly Trifexis (flea and heart worm preventative) pill last week and she vomited shortly after.

Since then she has a swollen paw and has been gnawing on it.

I gave her a bath with antibacterial shampoo and cleaned it with peroxide. The vet can’t see her til Wednesday.

Any home remedies I can try? Anyone else has this issue.

(She is allergic to Benadryl etc)

Is she still vomiting? Why in the hell can't your vet fit her in before Wednesday??

Is it possible that the two are not related? My dog has vomited after taking Trifexis when she took it on an empty stomach. The paw issue could be that she stepped on something or got stung. Either way, I wouldn't be pleased with a vet who couldn't see my dog right away when something like this comes up. Maybe your vet is giving you a not so subtle hint that you are freaking out over nothing? (editing to state that even if he is giving you this hint, he is still a bad vet who I would look into leaving)

It's just a dog. Instead of spending money on a vet, just take it outside and shoot it in the head, then go get another one for free from the pound.

Peroxide prob irritated it

It could be yeast & her chewing has it swollen & inflamed
Does her paw stink?

I’d watch very closely & try another vet if it seems worse

What's worse than vomiting, selling, and bad discomfort? Does it have to stop breathing?

The inside is usually way worse than an outside symptom!

Agreed. That's bullshite. Bring them in anyway and make a scene in the waiting room.

I'd go knock over the little pamphlet rack and throw the papers and clipboards and all the shite on the counter all over the ground.

Thx y’all - some good responses here.

She only vomited once several days ago and is eating etc

Maybe her paw issue is a sting etc

Will take her to a new vet in the morning

Can't give your dog Trifexis on an empty stomach. Probably unrelated to the paw.

My dog has thrown up her trifexis before, and it was on an empty stomach. It should be taken with food

Vomiting and rash/itching are listed as common side effects for trifexis. It's not unusual for dogs to suddenly have a reaction to it.

I've seen this happen before. Doesn't mean much in and of itself.

I would ask your veterinarian if he/she are in agreement with you on moving your dog away from this medicine. It is very harsh on their stomach. Works well, but many dogs can't tolerate it.

I recommend Bravecto for flea and tick prevention. 1 pill every 3 months. And Heartgard monthly for heartworm preventative. In my opinion, a much better and effective combination.

I wouldn't give my dog Trifexis - the original version that was only for ticks and fleas made my dogs sick - even on a full stomach.

Google Trifexis and death. Lots of info out there about how dangerous it is. Not sure if it's all accurate, but there are enough reports for me to steer clear of it. There is a variety of equally effective anti-parasitics for dogs, so no reason to stick with Trifexis and the 1000s of reports of sickness and hundreds of reports of death.

I use Bravecto for fleas - one dose lasts 6 mos (not three like they claim) and good old fashioned Heartguard for heartworms.

Had the same issue with our bulldog and switched to a combination of tri-heart plus and Nexguard. The paw itching is most likely unrelated and could be a bite, sting, debris, or generally allergy/yeast
