Most recent study has it costing 3.2 trillion, around 85% of current federal expenditures
But all you need is political “will”.....right?
How THE frick are we going to pay for such a massive expansion?

How much do Americans currently spend on health insurance premiums?

I always tell liberals the same thing. Tell me how you plan to ration care and demonstrate those principals in Medicare and Medicaid and we can talk about some kind of government funded health care for all.
Until then, you're not serious about this, it's just an ideological talking point.

I don’t understand. My professor told me it was free. That it was from the government. You know, free.

I agree it's retarded, but you have to calculate up how much is spent on insurance premiums collectively and then subtract from that number, as your insurance premiums would be going straight to the federal government. Single payer kinda works ok in some other places, but it would not work here because there are 40+% of the population that are used to having no federal tax burden, and single payer only functions at all if every single person is paying into it. You can be sure the Dems will try to implement it will simultaneously saying only 'rich' people will pay. Even in the places that have it semi successfully, wait times for critical procedures even are enormous. In Canada the average wait time to even see a specialist for a serious issue is 18+ weeks. Rationing and death boards are required. The quality of the health care and service we receive now in the us is a billion times better than these places, and our poor health as a country has nothing to do with our health Care system. If the average us citizen lost 20 lbs our health Care costs would be cut in like half

Americans spent $3.3 trillion on healthcare in 2017, so looks like single payer would be cheaper than the current system.

The average for an individual in 2016 was $321/mo, or $3,852/Yr. If that rate was used for roughly 325M Americans, that's $1.252T. The reality is many of those are covered as part of a family plan that is cheaper than the individual, and the real number is less than that. That's just premiums, of course. But that's what you asked. You would need to add the co-pays, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket stuff to get to a number more equivalent to the one being cited.
Link to CNBC Article which was the first one I saw with the answer on the Google machine

Wanna bet?

And the quality of care would fall drastically.

Seems very low. I pay much more than that for my family coverage.

A single payer system would be paid through taxes that are NOT based on amount of care consumed. Instead, it would be based on income.
What that means is someone today who doesn't use lots of healthcare and chooses low premium/high deductible plan would end up paying more in increased taxes if we switch to single payer.
That is the point of my OP. Single payer systems do not tax people more who consume higher amounts of care.
