Before I haul my electronics to a dumpster, I just want to check to see if anyone could use them for parts. All items, except the Sony TV, were purchased a little over two years ago. The Sony TV is at least five years old.

65” Samsung 4K Smart TV w/ One Connect

55” LG 4K Smart TV

55” Vizio 4K Smart TV

46” Sony HDTV

Bose Cinemate 120 Home Theater

NetGear N720 Router

What year is the samsung tv, and do you mean you have the SEK3500 expansion box, or is just one connect capable? I've been debating getting the SEK3500U to upgrade mine.

Lightning is no joke. I just lost a ton of stuff from it.

I've lost a few things too over the years, but some of mine were like one particular HDMI port no longer worked, etc.

The damage might be limited to the power boards on those, if it's worth checking.

That sucks.

My house got struck three years ago, but the only thing that blew up was the Invisible Fence unit, it literally blew up into pieces. All of our other electronics were fine.

I know you know this now, but it's worth saying anyway.... get a quality surge protector for your new stuff. It may also be worth having an electrician inspect your grounding system and earth rod.

Long shot but if he is still under home warranty would the contractor be responsible for getting this up to par? I doubt they'd pay for damaged goods but they might be willing to pay for the electrician to come out?

They are certainly better than nothing but I've lost stuff plugged into a $200 unit.

A surge protector isn't going to stop a direct lightning strike. You would need some expensive equipment to truly protect from lightning.

2011 lightening struck NEAR our house. No tripping of Surge Protectors (very expensive ones),circuit breakers, no soot at outlets. No sign of electric surge in house. AC was down. Found the circuit boards were fried. Had a laptop in a case, no Ethernet or WiFi connection. About half the files showed up as present, but were "unrecognizable" when I attempted to open them. All the NIC cards on all the computers and BluRay players were fried. Home Theater fried. Only answer was EMP from nearby strike. $50K damages. Insurance (eventually)covered it

Sounds like a direct hit. Nothing save having them unplugged will stop a direct hit.

It was purchased at the end of 2016. All I know about the One Connect is that it has a few HDMI ports.

Not only did it wipe out my electronics, even the items connected to Monster Power surge protectors, but it also wiped out my HVAC circuit boards, three automatic garage doors, 3 of 6 LED floodlights, my Generac auto transfer switch, and my Philips Sonicare toothbrush lol.
It’s been very costly and would hate to experience this again. I know this might sound silly, but is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?

They sell whole house surge protectors. The electrician who came out for my insurance claim tried to sell me one. I'm not sure how well they work, but I'll be looking into it at some point.

Truth. I changed a $100 power board on a $2k Roland piano and it works.
