What is the left's solution for immigration / the border?

I've always heard Democrats say while they are opposed to x measure (wall, mass deportation, what have you) they are in favor of "reasonable reform." Has anyone heard a leftist elaborate on this? Reminds me of "we don't want your guns".

They don’t have a reasonable reform.
If they took power and enough of them got a “no borders” bill going all of them would fall in line behind and push it through.

Their viewpoint is whatever the opposite stance Donald Trump takes. It’s not about policy.

Right. It's not quite time for them to come out and say they are for open borders in their calculation. Just like they did not come out for gay marriage until the 2012 election.

This goes back prior to Trump
I remember when Romney was talking immigration in 2012 that they'd always trot out vague platitudes

It's called COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM.....of course they can't tell you what it is, but they are for it

I’ve thought about immigration a lot.
It seems that we need to start investing in those countries so maybe they aren’t such shitholes to begin with.
Like power grids, dams, college education, road building, etc.
I don’t think turning our border into a DMZ is feasible and I don’t know what else to do.

This was just discussed on the Five. They are keeping locked lips before the elections. Some Democratic memorandum was sent nationwide to all Dem candidates instructing them not to bring up the subject in their campaigning. Even Juan Williams said it would be nice to know what their agenda is concerning immigrants.

What border? (According to them)

It's true. Up to 2016, their platform sounded just like Trump's with regard to policy. As soon as his immigration stance took hold during the election, Dems took a opposition stance just for the sake of opposition.

What immigration reform do you propose?

How about we follow the law.
Which is? Do you actually know what the law is for immigrants to get into the country legally. Something tells me you don't but I'm listening.

I talked to a leftist on Saturday, while having a beer at a local taproom. He was for immigration reform, a secure border, was for deporting people who weren't in the country legally. I asked him to elaborate, as he had indicated that he wanted to abolish ICE and he didn't want a wall.
He almost sounded reasonable, until he described the details of what he wanted. He wanted to perform a background check on everyone at the border, and if they are not a violent criminal or terrorist, they should be allowed in. No limits. The only people who would ever be deported were criminals and those who snuck across the border because they couldn't pass the background check.

Lol. Which is probably 97% of the world's population. Bring em on in boys!
Kudos to you for digging down into it.
