Who use to play Balata Balls

It is dating me here, but if you started the game playing Balata golfballs then you have seen some real changes in the game.
For the record, my favorite balata ball was the Maxfli HT. That was when Maxfli was a real player in the golf business. My Ping Eye2 lob wedge would just destroy the ball.

This guy. Used the Titleist Tour Balata and loved it - but yeah, one full wedge swing and it was game over. I alternated between that and the Titleist Tour Professional, which held up better.

I played balata and anything thin and that ball would almost be cut in half lol. I was more of a professional guy.

When I was a kid I would tee off with a Titliest Tour Professional 100 then sneakily swap it for a tour balata or Maxfli balata for the approach. In college I was a cart boy/ range picker upper at Pine Hills. The Hooters tour came thru there and supplied Topflight Z-balata for the dudes to hit on the range. Since I was a broke college kid I swiped a hundred or so and played Topflight Z-balata range balls for a couple years.

Played them all through HS, college and as a professional. Played Tour Balata, HT Balata, Strata Tour ball that O'Meara won the Masters with, and the Tour Edition ball Norman played.
Was on Titleist staff when the Professional was debuted.

That Spaulding Tour Edition ball cost Greg Norman a Masters or two.
That ball spun so much , he would hit a great shot and the ball would spin back off the green.
I still have one of his Tour Edition balls with the word Shark on it. He played in the Tour Championship at Champions GC here and he knocked a ball in the water and after he played on, I fished it out of the water.

I remember the Prestige ball.

I was playing with a guy last friday that had a sleeve of Topflight XLs that were dated 1984 on the box. I asked him where the frick he dug those out of and he told me that he went to some tournament and they gave everyone a sleeve lol.

Yep, my Ping Eye 2’s with square grooves used to shred balatas.
