LINK

American flight 3500 flight is supposed to go southeast from Garden City in Kansas to Dallas, but it is heading northeast, steady at 12000 feet

It has squawked 7700 which means emergency

Can any pilots here take a guess at what's happening? Not a hijacking because that would be squawk 7500

not maneuvering around weather either

Is it some kind of Payne Stewart thing maybe?

This is a little concerning.

Maybe some kind of cabin pressurization or mechanical issues? If they could, they would be circling back to land.

I don't know what I'm looking at in that link but your description sounds concerning.

Looks like it’s going in the right direction.

ETA: NM. Definitely heading north.

Real good chance they’re having an emergency.

It’s end destination is now GRI. Maybe just a wrong flight plan or plane issues?

Because it gets highlighted immediately on ATC's equipment, without needing a lengthy radio message to describe the problem and identify one's position

It appears to be heading towards an airport in Nebraska. The tracker says it should be there in about an hour. I'm guessing it was diverted for some reason?

Link has been updated to show destination is Grand Island, Nebraska and it's right on course.

squawked

What does that mean? Something intentional by the pilots/crew? If so, then maybe that is good news?

shite like this always makes me nervous. And I was reading about domed flights earlier (from the survivor thread) and was uncomfortable.

yeah weird though, it squawked emergency relatively early, I don't know why they wouldn't circle back

My question would be what had happened that is preventing them from just hitting the PTT button and talking to ATC? Some type of radio/comm failure maybe since transponder is pretty independent of those systems.
