What messages are you conveying with your utensils?

I do eat that way. I kind of wish I could do the whole American hand-switching thing, but it just feels odd, almost like golfing left-handed.

I just eat. When I get hungry.....I eat again. I've made it this long without protocols, I guess I'm doing alright.

I had taco bell earlier and it left my protocol a little incontinental.

I am right handed but eat with my fork in my left hand but with the teeth facing up so I guess I am sort of a hybrid.

I do not switch hands to cut my food. My non-dominant handles my cutting hand. Otherwise, you look like a caveman.

I cut my food like that, but I don't worry so much about utensil placement unless I'm at a nice restaurant.

Isn't the American style to put your utensils at the 4 o'clock position if you're still eating and the 6 o'clock position if you're not? Seems like there's a lot of potential for miscommunication here.

They used to catch American spies in the world wars because they’d cut their food the American way rather than the European way

Count me as one of those. Fork in left hand, turned down. Knife in right. Anything else would be uncivilized.

For cutting, yes. For sending signals of my meal progress, no. I've never heard of this to be honest.

Seems like an urban legend. American spies very rarely pose as foreign nationals, even back then.

They would either use Americans under civilian or diplomatic cover (not pretending to be foreign), or they would just recruit foreign nationals.

We were taught in etiquette class that utensils at 1 o’clock was the sign for being done with the food. Idk.

Fork and knife on the right side mean your waiting for seconds. Utensil handles at 5, pointing to 10 means you’re done.
