Easiest Golf Ball Color To See
Posted on 8/24/21 at 10:02 am

Is there any science behind the golf ball colors available these days or is it just about personal preference?
I have times where it is difficult for me to see white balls and I was wondering if any of the other colors available these days are objectively easier to see. I know there are yellow, green, red, orange, pink, etc.
What is everyone's thoughts on easiest color to see?

Golf Digest - Srixon study on golf ball visibility.
Srixon has studied it and says yellow is twice as easy to see at 210 yards and 3x more visible at 250 yards.
Edited to change years to yards since Mingo couldn’t figure it out.

I’ve only played with whites and neon yellow and I don’t feel like I get any benefit from either from a sight standpoint. I prefer white

Definitely think yellow is much more visible in bright sunshine.

Bryson is ecstatic to hear that. He thought 150 years was the limit only a few months ago

I went to Scottsdale this year and really wish I brought yellow balls. One guy in our group had yellow and was having a much easier time finding errant shots in the desert. It made me think that yellow should be the default color. I am just afraid of the stigma when looking to purchase balls.

Sometimes the grass color is pretty close to the yellow. I see white in the fairway better. I lose white in the air easily, especially under certain cloud conditions.

What stigma is that?
I have played MTBX yellow exclusively for the last year and just recently changed to ProV1x yellow. I doubt I'll ever change back to white TBH

That is exactly what I was wondering. Thanks for sharing that.

I think modern times things have changed a bit but I can relate to the sentiment. When I was younger (probably 20+years ago), people definitely saw colored balls as gimmicky and amateurish. You got the stigma of not taking the game seriously if you didn't play white.
I think this was also partly because nobody made high end balls in colors. All the colored balls were cheapo distance type balls made for casual/hacker golfers.

As I get older I find the yellow much easier to follow in the air most days. I started only buying the yellow Titleist balls, just works better for me. I see some companies are introducing the dual colored balls, that just looks like something from a Putt Putt place to me.

I have trouble seeing the yellow/green balls off the fairway. But I’m old with not good eyesight
On the other hand callaway makes these red matte colored neon balls that hurt your brain to look at….I can see those in flight from two holes over

Yellow is the most visible for me in the fairway as well as in the air. I'm red/green colorblind though, so I assume that has some impact.

My 8 year old loves playing with these
I can barely look at them while wearing sunglasses

All I know is the fluorescent red balls seem like they should be easy to follow but they are the hardest color to see after 100 yards.

I’ve been hitting the callaway matte red ones. Super softs. Reasonably priced and you can’t miss them SOBs. Especially helpful if you play on a course that has frickin goose feathers everywhere that look like white balls

You mean in flight?

They do bother me on the tee sometimes to be honest lol

9 year old me remembers watching Isao Aoki play with an orange ball in the US Open and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I don't know how long he used the orange ball as his career progressed, but I couldn't wait to learn how to play golf and use an orange ball.
As for colors, I stumbled upon a blue MOJO ball once, so I tried it. I wonder who thought this was a good idea. I couldn't see it in flight and I had trouble seeing it laying in the grass in the middle of the fairway.
