Seems pretty impressive to me given the limitations he’s working with in Ames.

Play calling bona fides, young (41), and has worked his way up through 10 years of impressive HC experience being named conference COY 4 times including 3 times in the Big 12.

I know he had a couple of tough road losses to good teams (top 10 Iowa and now ranked Baylor) after serious preseason hype, but again, it’s Iowa State.

Seems to me he should be near the top of the list but haven’t heard much about him lately.

Is does seem that people have cooled on him significantly. I don't watch or follow Iowa State enough to know why.

Agreed, not much chatter about Campbell (and Cristobal too), no idea why

Campbell is absolutely my #1 choice

They came into the year with big expectations and promptly lost two games and are now unranked.

They have some name opponents left on the schedule, if they win those you’ll see him back on peoples radars.

IMO, Campbell is a Midwestern guy and will stay in the area. His next job will either be Michigan, Penn State, or Notre Dame.

I think he’s keen on staying in the Midwest

I wonder if he has eyes on Michigan

He has been consistently terrible in September. That can work if you're at Iowa State and 9-3 is a fantastic season, but 5 years of 9-3 at LSU and he's gone.

And there's also an unsaid part where people quietly acknowledged that Iowa State wasn't actually that good last year and the hype around the program pre and early season was unwarranted.

Matt Campbell talk has died down because hiring Matt Campbell would make too much sense. Not as exciting as many of the other options. But a steady presence that I think would be good for our program. Haven't decided if he's my #1 choice, but definitely up there.

No ties to the south, doesn’t recruit well, and always loses a couple head scratchers

They’ve been highly ranked and lost to Northern Iowa and ULL at home

I think Campbell is great, but Iowa State tends to start slow, and improve throughout the season.

Last year was the only time since he's been there that the Cyclones got out of September with less than 2 losses. And that's only because they didn't play Iowa.

Honestly, the Iowa games are what gives me the most pause about Campbell. It's a huge rivalry, and Iowa State always implodes with awful turnovers or penalties. At this point, it has to be psychological.

I think Campbell missed his shot to strike while the iron was hot. He's had his moments, but never sustained anything. As you said, he's stuck in Ames, but he's certainly had opportunities to get out over the past few years as he seems to be mentioned in every job search.

More on him not being able to sustain, his end of year record since he took over is:
3-9
8-5
8-5
7-6
And he's 4-2 so far and not living up to expectations.

I think he might have held on too long at Iowa St and his name will never be as hot as it was the last 2-3 seasons.
9-3

Iowa St had won 8 or more games once in the previous 38 years before Matt Campbell took the job

He’s done it 3 of 5 seasons lol
