Here's another issue
I've talkd about this before. New games compete with old game much more directly than they used to.
In previous generations the technology jumps were big enough that new games made old games look crude. You didn't have tow orry about anyone picking older games over your newer games.
That is not true today. Video games from the past 10-15 years all look and play largely the same as brand new games today. Older games compete more strongly with newer games than they ever have before.
These AAA studios releasing mediocre slop won't cut it.

Eh, my boys will love it. We have 2 in the house waiting to be wrapped.
I'm to the point with Nintendo that any of their technology and IP is for my kids. If they do eventually release the Twilight Princess/Wind Waker remasters, I would probably check them out. But Metroid Prime is one of my all time favorite games and I barely touched that remaster and I don't have any desire to play the new one.

There is very little margin on consoles if any.
Tariffs forced their hand.. don't think they would have been raised otherwise

Saturation would be my guess
Saturation? If anything, the market is shrinking in terms of console gaming. More and more people I know are going with handhelds like the Switch, Steam Deck, and Legion Go. That's not even counting the growing number of people who are switching to PC gaming.

The consoles were always loss leaders for game sales. At which point they no longer are, console sales are going to feel the pain.

Gaming is in a terrible spot. More importantly though, modern game developers just aren't as talented or passionate as those who came before.
Modern game devs thrive on corporate burocracy to obfuscate responsibility for their shoddy work and spend more time complaining about their mental health and avoiding "crunch" than making good games.

As always: no, it isn't.
Does this describe some devs/games? Absolutely. Does it describe all of them? Absolutely not. Speaking of, time to get back to playing the GOTY Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Pulled the trigger on switch 2 for kids Christmas. I’m pretty excited, nothing better as a kid than betting a new console for Christmas. But as others have mentioned, lack of new games is wild.

Everyone that wants a console, got one.
Market is saturated.

Ehh you get Mario kart and maybe Mario party or donkey Kong and they will remember that Christmas morning forever

Yep got the Mario kart pack in, can’t wait to spend all day playing. My son wanted madden so added that. Will probably add one more game my daughter will like.

Mario Party is my daughters favorite

The market is oversaturated with corporatized, half-assed, unfinished, overpriced games that no one wants to play.
We are 100% living in one of the worst eras for video gaming and it’s not even close. The corporatization of AAA developer companies has led to more emphasis being placed on “quantity over quality” and maximizing profits. Passionate developers are extremely rare to find now since corporatization has led to executives (most of whom know absolutely frick all about making video games) wanting all creative control.

I stand by my forever-held belief that good graphics and presentation does not equal good gameplay.
Platform games from the late 90s/early 2000s like Crash Bandicoot and Sly Cooper still have infinitely better replay-ability than 99% of the dogshit that gets pumped out today.

It doesn’t seem like there have been nearly as many meaningful games on PS4/PS5
I wouldn’t say that this is really the case for PS4. There were some INSANELY good games and exclusive titles that came out for the PS4 back in 2013-2017. Outlast, The Last of Us, Alien Isolation, The Evil Within 1 & 2, Killzone, etc.
Now for the PS5, I would definitely say that’s true. Post-COVID has been absolutely awful for the PS5 in terms of flagship titles. It’s one of the main reasons I’ve refrained from buying a PS5.

The Last of Us launched on PS3. They ported it over to PS4 a year later as the “remastered” version.
I didn’t even know Killzone had a PS4 title until I googled it. Looks like the only one that launched on PS4 was Killzone Shadow Fall, which I’ve never played but doesn’t look like it exactly blew reviewers away?
Regardless I’m not saying there weren’t any good releases on PS4. Just that there were fewer quality releases than the previous console generations. The PS5 era has definitely been the worst though, as you mentioned.

Like I said, with each succeeding generation of consoles, as the graphics get better and better, game play quality goes down.

Survivorship bias. According to IMDB, there were 741 games released in 1996, the year Crash was released. The overwhelming majority of them were dogshit and no one gives them a thought today (TIL that there was a Vampire Diaries video game released in 1996…). There are excellent games being released routinely; I don’t understand why people insist on fixating on the bad games instead of on the good ones. Being, you know, that’s exactly what people do when they talk about games from thirty years ago.
