IMO the Grace segments are slightly better than RE7 but at the very least on equal terms and don’t overstay their welcome

I thought the ARK section was way too short. That section was masterfully done. Felt like a mixture of Alien: Isolation and Doom 3.

I had got to the point where I input the code into the 2nd item box puzzle from the severed hand where you get a creepy child’s laugh

Who the hell could have ever figured out you needed to have the doll in your inventory when you do it? I’ve seen the doll before but it looked irrelevant so I just didn’t pick it up

I will play this eventually. I'm not the biggest fan of RE. From a survival horror standpoint, there are generally much better, much scarrier games out there.

I enjoyed RE4 Remake. RE Village was just ok. RE2 Remake was bleh.

RE5 might be my favorite because of how batshit insane it is

I dipped my toe into Insanity.

I am glad that I got the infinity ink ribbon already because the first large Grace area where you collect the quartz crystals is a fricking slog. I am progressing bit by bit and save scumming my way through it.

I have an infinite rocket launcher for the Leon sections, but I unfortunately did not have enough credits to get the universal infinite ammo unlock. Insanity zombies are stout and Freya's needle just pisses ammo away.

The series is at it's best when they try to reinvent it. RE4 original and RE7 come to mind as 2 of the standouts.

100%

But I seriously doubt now that Capcom will ever take the level of risk that they did with RE4 and RE7. They’re going to keep milking the franchise with more remakes.

What's left to remake? Code Veronica, 5, 6, zero and maybe 1?

The list is running low. I am not opposed to any of these being done. Never played code veronica. 6 would be a challenge to "save" after the poor reception of it's original counterpart. selfishly, I wouldn't mind an over the shoulder action oriented remake of 1 but it really doesn't need it.

If anything, they ought to make an apology remake for 3 and give it away for free to anyone who bought that cash grab that they released initially. So much potential pissed away.

Did anyone else feel like the second half of the game with Leon in Raccoon City was a massive letdown?

Yes. Felt the exact same.

I loved the entire Grace campaign. Was classic Resident Evil style gameplay, which I strongly prefer. My favorites are still the originals 1-3 and CV. (4 is obviously insane good, just in it's own unique way, the best overall game in the series for sure).

I had high hopes for Leon's campaign, especially since the first major segment was quite good (the part where you are trying to assemble the detonator). Felt like an actual RE campaign, just action oriented. Very RE4.

However everything after that didn't feel like a campaign anymore, it was just a bunch of set pieces. No real exploration, no real zones, etc.

I also like RE games when the story is int he backgroun, and mysterious and slowly reveals (like 1-2). RE is at it's worst when they try to push the story to the front and make that the main focus. And the last half of Leon's campaign is them just indulging in "story" when that's not why I play these games.

Was also really surprised that we didn't see Chris, Jill, or Claire even once. This is supposed to be the grand finale of the Raccoon City RE universe and we don't see 3 of the major 4 cast members? In any capacity? Int he end when the cavalry arrived I was fully expecting to see Chris and Jill there at least, they are the freaking OG's.

In fact, I think they did a poor job of tying in most of the games. RE1 and the mansion incident, not even referenced, nor Las Plagas, nor the Ethan games at all. It was more a love letter to the RE2 remake than anything else, was expecting a little bit more of the other games to weigh in in some way.

Regardless, great game. Lotta good tension and scares, found it very difficult actually. I played on Standard Classic which I thought was just normal with ink ribbons but it turns out is like a modest hardcore mode, may try insanity later.

Highly polished as you would expect from modern Capcom. Almost TOO polished in some ways. Sometimes extremely polished games can feel sorta "theme park ride" to me rather than me actually playing it.

Capcom unfortunately now aggressively leans into the main characters talking to themselves trope to tell the player what to do, which is annoying as heck and is a cancer in modern gaming, coming from someone who loves the old school games.

I also miss area music in RE games. The oldschool games had a ton of area music, the new ones are almost entirely silent, which is great for a lot of places for tension however I would like some areas to have creepy theme music again. Like wen they began playing the classic RE2 police lobby theme in Leon's section, that's what music gives you, mood and atmosphere.

So yeah, any fan of the series will def. want to get it. They definitely missed a few easy opportunities to make it an all time classic but it's still a great game.

RE1 remake hasn’t aged well on late gen consoles. I tried playing it the other day on my PS5 and it was pretty bad. The gameplay was super clunky and the graphics have aged like milk. I can definitely get behind remaking that one, if Capcom stays true to what made it so great in the first place. But that’s probably one of the only RE remakes I would play.

Honestly, at this point, if Capcom can’t come up with any more ideas, they should just let the RE franchise rest and move on to other things.

The RE brand is too big to let it sit ideal from a business standpoint.

What makes sense to me is turning into an analogy series.

Keep it horror themed obviously, spin up new storylines and settings. Maybe it's for 1 game, maybe 2, then repeat. You can make RE games forever this way.

Here’s the problem with that kind of thinking: it incentivizes profit over quality. It turns once-great franchises into soul-less money making machines for companies. That’s how you end up with franchises like COD where there’s an unfinished, half-assed game shitted out every year with no passion put into their development.

Capcom would have to stick to doing a single high quality release every say ~3'ish years for this strategy to work out long term.

They already had their "milk RE" era, the 2000-2010 timeframe we were drowning in RE spinoff games almost all of which were either medicore or terrible.

RE spinoff games have all but disappeared the last decade which is a good thing.

I mean, there was sort of a hiatus between 2004 and 2009 if you ignore the arcade-themed games. But the games were definitely starting to lose their soul by the 2009-2012 year mark.

I think the biggest question at this point is how Capcom can continue the series while maintaining the integrity of it. They’ve explored so many ideas and concepts that you have to wonder if they’ll ever run out of ideas.

This is the biggest thing that I absolutely hate about modern AAA games. They’re basically interactive movies with hyper-realistic characters with occasional moments of gameplay sprinkled in.

RE1 was masterclass in not revealing everything and forcing you to have to figure out everything on your own with very little direction. That’s how Resident Evil should be played. But that kind of gameplay doesn’t sell among casual gamers now since gaming is such a widespread form of entertainment compared to what it was in the early 2000s.

It pisses me off that they couldn't just figure out a way to extend the care center segment of the game. If they could have just cut the Raccoon City part out and figured out a way to extend the care center segment a little bit longer, this game would have easily blown RE1R and RE7 out of the water.

I finished it last night, and echo the sentiment of most people here. The first half was a 10/10. The second half was still great, but not as intense as the first half. Overall I give the game an 8/10. Still incredible. The last 3rd after racoon city flew by and felt kinda rushed.

This is my first full playthrough of an RE game, and I'm kinda itching for another one. What would ya'll recommend? I was thinking either RE2 or RE4 remakes.

Both are fantastic. RE2 is more horror/tension based and RE4 is probably the best overall game in the entire series, perfect blend of horror, atmosphere, gameplay. Both remakes are very true to the feels of the originals.

You really need to play RE2 Remake, then RE4 Remake, then RE7 and 8
