All of this depends on the tees you're playing from - and courses are getting much longer
High school golf isn’t playing courses tipped out. Far from it.

So would shooting par be a better than a hole in one?
My career round is a 74. I have a hole in one and would trade it without a second thought for a round of even par 72.

My nephew that has a college golf scholarship and can hit a 6 iron 220 yards has never had an eagle much less a hole in one - and he's prob played 2000 rounds of golf.
Lol. I am not sure which part, but at least some part of this is total bullshite.

Gatekeeping what tees people play from is the worst.
You'd rather be behind them as they hack away from tees they have no business playing? That's no fun for anyone

Any course you can run a ball up on the green and make it in the hole isn't a legit course
So, you've never played the Old Course? Legit enough?
Bandon Dunes is another. You CAN use your putter from a 100 yards away.
What's an average golfer? 10, 20, 36 hcp?
I've witnessed two. One from an 10-12 hdcp and one from a 20-something hdcp.
My cousins' wife has at least two (at Abita Springs) and she had only been playing for two years.

I’m a 2 hdcp and I’ve had 3 double eagles and plenty of eagles, but never a hole in one. I once played with a guy who shot 108 with a hole in one. Go figure

I find that highly unlikely. I play golf a handful of times a year these days and I get an eagle every now and then. And I've never been good enough to be a college golfer.

Shooting your age is definitely the bigger accomplishment, IMO.
This talk about it having to be a "legit" hole in one is silly. The US Open has a par 3 less than 115 yards this year. Yeah, it was over water, but am average golfer can hit the ball 100 yards.

What's the greatest accomplishment in golf - an eagle - a hole in one - I know an albatross is nearly impossible
I’ve actually done both.
I have two holes out shots on the same hole. First time I chucked a wedge into a pond and then reteed and holed out for par. Four years later playing with the same two people on the same hole, hit a beautiful wedge shot that bounced once, bit and backed up right into the hole for a hole in one.
Had my albatross on a par 5, second hole on the course. Hit a nice drive which left me about 205 to the pin. Hit a hybrid with a little fade that landed just shy on the green, rolled up the slope and tracked right into the hole.
I’m about as average as they come. My hole in one round ended up pretty decent, shot in the low 80s but played the next two holes with my hole in one ball because i was so excited it didn’t dawn on me to swap balls. The albatross happened a long time ago in high school. I remember promptly giving back all three strokes in the next two holes.

Is the Sheep Ranch legit enough?
Hole in one

Yes . . . The average golfer can make a hole-in-one. I’ve seen a skulled tee shot go in and I’ve seen one ricochet off a bunker rake and go in.
There is a certain amount of luck involved, especially if you happen to play a hole that has a pin placement where shots funnel to the hole. That being said, the more you play the more chances you have. I have one friend that is a teacher so he plays a lot of golf in the summer; he is about a 8-10 handicap and he has 9 aces.
There are plenty of really good golfers that don’t have any.

I get what OP is saying about "legit" hole in ones but come on man, if you strike a golf ball with your club one time on a regular par 3 hole, and it goes in the hole, it's a damn hole in one. It can be mis-hit (thin, bladed, sliced, etc) but it still takes some skill to get the ball off the tee box, in the air somewhat, and advancing towards the green/hole at the correct distance. It does take some luck of course but it's "legit"
I have one hole in one. I'm a 10 HC. #17 at OCC, hit a thin low cut, bounced on the front of the green and rolled into the hole. Pin was middle left.
I had my first witnessed hole in one 2 weeks ago. Playing the 6/6/6 tournament at OCC, my partner hit one on #15 from 163 with a 7 iron. I had just hit before him, thought mine was going in, hit about 10 feet short of the pin and rolled to about 5 feet. He hits his shot, perfect strike and never left the flag. It lands in front of my ball about 2 feet from the cup, one hops in. It was nuts.

I have one hole in one. 205 yd with a 5 iron.
I saw 4 more and out of the 4, only one was a great shot.
I saw one at Jack Pardee's Oilers tournament where the ball never got 5 feet off the ground bounced 10 times went in and the guy won a BMW.

My only hole in one was pretty early in my golf career, I was probably about a 25hcp. I am now a single digit hcp and haven't been close in some time

In Shreveport, don’t remember name, querbes? 150? Yards. Came within 3 inches 3 other times. Been a long time. I only played about 3 years.

I've been a good golfer for about 20 years now. Scratch during certain points. And I've never made a whole in one. It's pretty frustrating
I've hit the pin numerous times and come within inches, but to no avail. I have made a double eagle though. That was pretty fun.
This is true. We used to have a par three course in Shreveport. The back 9 were all 150 yards or closer. I was playing with brother in law one day, who was not a good golfer, and the course was empty. On 18, which was like 110 yards, he jokingly said let's play this hole with our putters only. I went first and had a pretty decent putt, it rolled off the ride side of the green. He gets up and as soon as he hits it you knew it was solid. It rolls up and drops right in the whole. Dead center, perfect speed. We went nuts.

Mancil Davis in the Woodlands has over 50 recorded.
They call him the King of Aces.

Three aces, two from the tips.
One double eagle; par 5 from the tips, with a strong helping wind. I’m prouder of that than any of the aces.
My ultimate goal in golf is to shoot my age. Have to stay healthy, and be a pretty good golfer. They say most age-shooters do it between ages 76-80. Not sure my body will make it that far, but keeping the hope.

I played with one of our young pros this past weekend.
He told me afterwards that many people are choosing to play tees beyond their skill level.
100% agree with this. I was a club pro and 75% of my membership played to their ego rather than their ability. Rule of thumb I always told people was if you break 80 consistently from your normal tee box, then it's time to move back a set.
My buddies try to play from tees between 6200 and 6500 yards, but that's usually too short for me. At that length, I'm hitting 9 irons and wedges into every par 4 and hybrid/long irons into par 5s.
As for holes in one, I have 4- clubs ranged from 4 iron to sand wedge.
