quote:I don’t mark it every single time. I’ll use the tip of my putter to mark it while I’m squatted down to clean it and line it up. But I do mark it often so it’s not in the way or so I can clean it while I walk around getting the read while I wait my turn.
Are people really marking their ball to adjust it when playing just rounds with their friends?
I use a small one like the ones found in divot tools. I’ve collected a bunch from courses I’ve played. Bandon, pinehurst, whistling, etc. I’ll grab whichever one my fingers clench when I’m pulling out tees and my divot tool.

Not always, but I find I putt better when I do. Something about marking it, picking up the ball, and just taking a good look at the line makes me more confident.

I do it most of the time and it’s really just habit from high school golf and I like to clean my ball off if needed.
I do all this while others are hitting so I'm not taking up time because it’s annoying if you see someone doing that while putting for double while everyone’s been waiting on the green.
Honestly if I’m in that position I won’t do it either just to speed up a bit and get out of everyone’s way

This too. Similar feeling when I fix a ball mark on the green from a well struck shot. It’s kind of a confidence boost to say “hey you’re not so bad at this game“
then next hole I proceed to pull hook driver off the face of the earth

Mark it just to clean it. I don't line up putts.

Hmm. I always just pick it up and clean it
Never thought about making it not in a tourney round
I have almost fricked it up in tournaments though because of this

I think for me it's probably like another poster said, it's a habit I got into playing high school golf and never changed. Also lick it or spit on it (HEY O!) to clean it up a little. I don't really know if I put it right back down usually or wait when I'm playing with buddies. I just put it down with no logo showing, that's the only thing I make sure of. I don't want anything resembling a line on there.
Started back playing competitively this year and man sometimes I feel like I'm playing college women's golf with some of these dudes. I don't care if someone takes the time to line up putts, but don't line up the two footers and the 40 footers. Buddy the word amateur is in the title of the tour we play on

I have a 3 Jack National marker I like

The marker from the divot tool. I have at least 3 in the bag at all times. Still haven’t opened the one I got at The Masters.

I have one with the whistling straits logo. The logo is so good I can’t not use it.

I’ve done a study. IF I take a golf ball out of the sleeve, it has a strong desire to go swimming or get lost. IF I coax the new ball to the green, it will develop and extreme fear of heights as it rests on the lip.
Lost Golf balls I find seem to perform better. With a scuff or two from the cart path resting in high grass, or some spa time submerged in a pond or creek, they overcome their fear of success; until they make a birdie.

Competition or out with friends?
Competition: Dimes only. Heads up if I spot where it is, and tails up if I have moved it.
Friends: Tee, ball repair tool, tap it in, roll it a few inches, etc. Whatever it takes to keep things moving quickly.

I use a variety of markers I have in my bag. Mostly pennies, but I do have a Masters and a Pebble Beach markers I use to brag that I played, but not really. What pisses me off is people that think that their marker is good luck. Really.

2018 Masters Marker. Been through 5 of them cause I lost about 1 a year

I have a hammered copper blank from Liberty Ball Markers that I’ve used the past 2-3 years. Really like it and it doesn’t stand out on the green for my playing partners.

I found it in my uncle‘s house after he passed away and I’ve been using it since. There’s no way in the world I would have anyone in my golf group that had a problem with me using a marker this size

I don't care what people use as long as they "sand divots in the fairway, repair ball marks on the green and rake bunkers"...
