Pro Golf once again with an absolutely ridiculous drop

It’s getting out of hand. The drop MacIntrye got today is absolutely comical. And it decided the tournament. The players that are the best of the world get the most ridiculous rulings and treatment

So, you don’t want the officials to equitably apply the official rules of golf in a high level professional tournament? You want the guy to say “well, you’re entitled to relief under the rules, but that wouldn’t be fair, so no drop for you”?

That putt he made on 18 was awesome! Glad for the young man even though he does seem a bit of a douche.

I also feel outside of that issue the rules are absurd and lack common sense

His stance was interfered with by a sprinkler head. He's entitled to relief. There is nothing in the rules that says it’s incumbent on the player to recreate the previous lie. 95%+ the rules punish you. 5% of the time you get a break. That’s golf.

A proper ruling would have been the sprinkler head buried in grass so much that he didn’t know it was even there until taking a practice swing not even addressing the ball does not warrant relief

Actually it does, until such time as he strikes the ball, the rule may be applied if applicable

If he was standing on it during his practice swing how would he be standing on it during his actual swing? His feet were nowhere near the same spot

I’m just tired of seeing shots 70 yards off line in a hospitality area granted free relief. Declare those internal OB.
When I’m that far offline, I’m in a yard OB.
The best players in the world should have to deal with internal OB rather than, “they scoreboard behind those 14 trees is in my line. So I’m going to drop. Now I’m near a path so I’m going g to drop. Now that data collection equipment is on my line so I’m going to drop.”
All the way out of any trouble.

Leave it to the founders of golf to put sprinklers in the rough. Their more concerned on growing rough than fairway.

Have you been to a pga tour event? Most of the hospitality areas are just a few yards off the hole. Not “70” and they’re also not typically in places that would otherwise be “OB” because OB is often designated by the course’s property boundaries. Most of those off line shots would be in the rough, so the idea of them having a stroke and distance penalty is ridiculous

That was some Patrick Reed level stuff. His practice swing took a huge swath of that fescue out right where his stance would have been. To me, that's just not in line with the spirit of the rules.

It’s very similar to the tiger rock ruling in terms of bad interpretations from the ruling official of the rules spirit IMHO. I also take issues with the rule itself but that’s another discussion
MacIntyre could not feel the sprinkler. After tearing the grass away with his practice swing, he then could feel the sprinkler So I mean just how much can you tear away at the actual course to expose things to get in your way?. Because the sprinkler head was not in his stance until he made it in his stance by landscaping the damn course with his club
I mean, if you dig into the ground enough you can expose a lot of things: pipes, wires, water lines, etc

This needs to be fixed for OB anyway. Take your penalty stroke or 2 (I don't care) and drop where it went out.

My only question with it was why do they have a sprinkler head buried in the rough on that course?
Also, he took a few swings to clear out the area and to make his stance spot better. How is this legal??? If he doesn't take a few practice swings and clear out some of the grass then he doesn't even notice the sprinkler head.
Those two things didn't make any sense to me at all.

I mean according to the rules official there you would be allowed to continually hack at the ground where your stance is until you exposed something under grass
There are numerous things that are under the grass at all times

The Masters many times.
The concession area left of 3 is very far from the line of play.

I agree and so does Ben Crenshaw.
He has been preaching this for decades.
