This spring and summer I'm taking a five-month RV trip visiting national parks in CA, the PNW and into ID, MT, SD, MN, WI, the UP and MI and then back to AZ via the old Route 66. Obviously one of the main criteria will be availability and looking at maps of clubs for both on my route and there is a smattering for both, obviously near the more populated cities along the route. Looking for a decently-equipped gym to train but also for some amenities like decent shower facilities and Wi-Fi. PF is cheaper ($25/mo. for membership allowing me to train at any facility vs $40/mo. at AF) and I haven't ruled out joining both. I haven't stepped foot in either facility and will before I join but wanted to get feedback from those who have. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I despise both, but you will have more equipment options and generally nicer facilities at Planet Fitness.

The only things Anytime may offer that PF doesn't is 24/7 access (I don't think all the PF's are 24/7) and heavier dumbbells. All the PFs I've been in, the dumbbells stopped at like 75-80 pounds

ETA: People downvoting have not used both. I was a member of Anytime for 7-8 years while in undergrad and grad school. Probably used over 20 locations between Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Unless they have made serious upgrades, Anytime just lacks equipment options.

Unless he is big on deadlifts, he can do every movement on a smith machine

I've never been to a Planet Fitness, but I imagine they're all basically the same.

Anytime Fitness gyms can very by location. I believe they use a franchise model. And that gives the owner some leeway on what equipment they carry.

I think it depends on the location and the owner.

I used to train at an Anytime. The kid who ran the place was an avid Crossfitter, so he kept the gym well stocked with barbells, places, kettlebells, dumbbells, etc. And he had no issue with us lifting heavy.

Then a new owner came in, fired the crossfit kid, banned chalk, and tried to limit how much someone can lift. And basically ruined the gym. All the serious lifters cancelled their memberships and went elsewhere.

AF has been solid for me and they definitely vary by location. There are much better gyms in Lafayette but the convenience is too hard to beat.
I’ve used some occasionally while traveling and most have all the equipment you need.

Club4 in Lafayette has been great for me. It gets really crowded during the day and evening but it’s very tolerable at 5am. They’re getting ready to open a 2nd location on Johnston.

Anytime > Planet Fitness
Planet Fitness is fine for a budget friendly gym, but it’s the Walmart of fitness centers. Packed with cheap/trashy people. Especially in BR where you have pockets of section 8 housing by every PF. I’ll happily pay more for less of a crowd and higher quality members.

I use PF and it’s mostly fine. Basic stuff.

Only thing that bothers me is an abundance of people with headphones on who want to take 10 min between reps while sitting on a machine.

Like WTF are you doing… do your sets and move on.

Free weights > machines

Someone below compared PF to Wal-Mart and i would actually compare it to McDonalds but both work. Machines oriented for the fat and diabetic.
