Siding roof and trim are all complete.
Still waiting on the garage door to be delivered.
Next up is getting the electrical service ran out there. Should be in the next couple of weeks. Getting the external disconnect installed today.
After that will be some framing and electrical work. That'll take me awhile. Back to working on my own again.

Looks awesome
All the hard work and inevitably a few hammers dropped on your foot in the process and you end up with beauty.
Anything you'd change if you could go back?

It's hard to say at this point. I haven't really gotten to use the shop yet. And I still have a mile to go. I can't really finish the shop out until I have insulation and can't do insulation until electricity and framing is done. I'll be going overkill on outlets in the shop for sure. And everything will be 20A 12ga.
Some small things. The one thing that pops out in my mind is I should have bit the bullet and brought in another 100 yards of base material. Now I'm going to have to do some excavation at some point. It's not too bad, but getting the grade a little higher would have been less effort.
The shop started off as a 40X40, then added the pool house then grew the shop and pool house to make it a buy once cry once build. The saying is you can never go too big from a functional aspect. Build to what your budget can tolerate. I'm pretty fortunate that I haven't had to take a loan on anything.
My idea right now with the 700 sq ft pool house is to have it be its own efficiency. Full kitchen, bedroom, living area/office. I'm struggling on layout. The bathroom is technically in the shop space, so the full 700 ft is for everything except bathroom. But the layout is somewhat ambiguous at the moment. Maybe a detailed blueprint before I started would have been nice, but that's not how I roll.
Electric company showed up today unexpectedly to run service. Those dudes were out there giving it hell in the rain but the terrain here is so rocky they're going to have to bring out a rock saw. So it looks like electricity is closer than I expected. I'm going to have to finish up the meter/disconnect/breaker box installation tonight.

How far is the main from your shop? Time to get trenching

It's getting it's own service from the utility company. It's 180 feet of trenching from the pole to the meter. They offered to let me do the trenching and putting the conduit in the ground, but the most I'd be saving was like $500 if everything went 100% according to plan. I'm picking my battles right now and $500 possibly isn't enough of a bite for me to go through all that.

Been a bit since I've updated the thread.
Got the shop lights all installed, couple of fans, and got the roll up door mounted and the bathroom framing started. One more fan on the way for the front bay.
Door company sent me mismatching sprockets for the door and opener, so I'm waiting on them to resolve that issue. Door was 2500 lbs which was surprisingly heavy. Didn't expect that. I called 5 or 6 companies for a quote to hang the door. Only one gave me a quote of $2,500 and I provided all lift equipment which I thought was absurd for a 2 man job. So I ended up knocking it out with a buddy. Took about 4 hours. One company said it was bigger than he could handle, and another company wouldn't give me a quote and just said "there's no money in it". Guess I need to go into hanging garage doors. I wouldn't mind making a couple grand a day for a 4 hour job.
Breaker panel could be a little more organized, but It's not a disaster. My plan right now is that the left side will be my shop breakers and the right side will be the guest house breakers.
These little breakers are pretty cool. I guess the down side is if one breaker goes, you lose all 3 circuits. But it saves space and the breaker is cheaper than buying 3 individual breakers.

I see you haven't started filling every square inch of it up with shite yet. Soon.
Those roll up doors are heavy as hell. We have some at work that are 30 feet tall and 20 feet wide. I bet they weigh 3 tons.

I'm really trying not to until I get insulation, but that feels like it's a year away. Still have to get water to the building, get the water inside the building run, electrical all done and framing all done. But I've moved quite a bit out there around the corner from the picture. Trying to limit what I move out there to things that are on wheels at least.

Looking good. Is there a reason you haven’t staggered the 115 volt breakers?
Posted on 2/18/26 at 7:42 pm to DownshiftAndFloorIt
The 8’ LED strips plugged into outlets is exactly what my electrician just installed in my storage barn and I’m very happy with them.
OP, I’m blown away, you remind me so much of my 99 year old Dad. He had all these skills, started out building cedar chests and other furniture in his teens, and is a skilled electrician, plumber and terrific carpenter, not bad for someone with a PhD in Chemistry. He built most of the house I grew up in, that he still lives in to this day.
I didn’t think they made them like that anymore, but you’re restored some faith in the future. Tip of the hat to you!

Im not sure i understand the question? You asking why i havent stacked them from the top down instead if left to right?
Going from top to bottom every other breaker hits a different bus bar. So im not pulling from the same bus bar for every circuit.
Maybe i dont understand the question your asking. ]

Thats awesome man. My interests dont seem to fall in line with most people's interests. I hate traveling outside of a few places. Dont like watching much TV or movies or traveling. Im not the keast but stimulated visually outside of my eife being in front of me. My goal in life is to make my home my retreat. When im off a day all I want to do is make progress of some sort of my property and this is by far my biggest project.
How is your dad's health at 99? I sure hope i can be a relatively healthy 99 and still have some sort of energy to do something productive even if its in smaller spurts.
I work to live nit live to work and somehow managed to do well even not giving my work my life. I do work late nights and odd hours but infrequently enough it doesnt kill me.

Thanks for asking. His health is failing, but his mind is still sharp. On a nice day he will be crawling around in his garden pulling weeds, and he’s still planting fruit trees that take several years to bear fruit. I tell him I admire his optimism.
Will enjoy watching the continuation of your project with a mix of admiration and a little bit of envy.
