Mounting a TV on Hardie siding question.

There should be 1/2" plywood behind hardie board, right? As long as I get long enough screws, hitting a stud shouldn't be really important... OR am I missing something?

I'd still try to hit a stud.

Odds are 1/2” OSB. Now days, you never know what behind it.
1/2” OSB then vapor barrier, Tyvek, felt, or the like.

I still made sure to drill into a stud when I hung my TV outside on hardie siding.

Sooooo, any tips to finding the stud?

Are there any outlets on the wall? That should be nailed to a stud. Then go from there.

Find an outlet, find out what side the stud is on, then 16” on center for the next one. If Sheetrock on the other side of the wall, you can check for the studs.

With these new TVs unless you are mounting an 80” or something I wouldn’t worry OP. These new flatscreens weigh nothing

Even though TVs are fairly light theses days I'd still aim for a stud. Also, never re-use a hole in Hardie. If you take a screw out you should replace it with a larger one or drill a new hole.

I have 55” mounted right on the siding no problem. Now if you have one of these swing arms brackets that can move any direction you need a stud.
TVs don’t with anything today
