Really. Can you imagine some high school kid with his agent doing a shake down on Saban?

Saban played $$ before $$was legal. That was the uneven playing field that gave bama the upper hand.

Saban would not have the 5 stars stacked 3 deep at all positions waiting 3 years on their turn to play. They would have transferred out in today’s game for more money.

Saban would have struggled with the portal too because Texas Tech and Miami could outbid Alabama for players.
I think OP meant if Saban was hired instead of Lane. I think we can all agree that was never going to happen. I don't think Saban is as good in this era as he was in his era. Nothing against him, jmo.

Pretty sure with booster support saban easily couldve worked hard to make deals. Pretty sure that drive is just gone for him, as it should be. Kiffin has done nothing to earn the saban talk he has garnered on TD in any fashion. He looks to be building a good team on paper, but damn yall are taking it too far

70 year old Saban? Probably not. A middle aged Saban in his prime would have a fair shake at being successful in this climate. Especially at a program that supports it. It’s hard for me to just claim failure on a man who’s career was coming to an end when this all came about.

He couldn’t do any of what Lane is doing right now. CLK was THE best choice.
Lane is a perfect choice for the way things are today, but Saban could absolutely do the same if he chose to. He proved he could adapt to the changing landscape multiple times. If he were 10 years younger, he would have adapted again and kept going.

Saban worked money before it was legal. Now that everyone can do it, bama’s advantage is gone and the playing field is leveled.
This is the absolute truth. Bama had far and away the best system of bag men and car dealers for players to take their 82 Dodge Omnis to get fixed where they could get chargers as loaner cars.
Once it because legal to pay players and Bama lost their advantage, Saban quit. He lived in the gray areas taking advantage of every loophole he could - similar to Billicheck. He was a very good coach, but literally willing to do whatever it took. He had the REC behind him and dirt on Emmert. He also had the SEC office making favorable schedules for him and the Rece Davis/Brad Edwards/Espn media jihad stumping for him at every point.
Ultimately, his record can’t be ignored, but it must also come with that asterisk
They used to say Bear Bryant could “take his and beat yours, then take yours and beat his”.
Saban won because he had more talent. And when he lost, like the GOTC in 2011, he got a do-over.

I've said this for years. The GOAT wasn't really the GOAT, he just had Dodge Chargers and $$ for his recruits, and never had the NCAA up his arse.
I get what you're saying, but isn't working the system to stack every possible advantage in your favor part of the equation? You could argue that there are many coaches that would have success if they had the same advantages that he had, but he was the one who created those advantages and sustained them.
To add, we paid players too. In fact Saban paid players here(rememeber the Miami pipeline)Many of them. Many of these comments are short sighted and emotional responses because he did what we couldnt, dominate. If it had been us there would be no complaining, no excuses just celebration and us arguing the other side. They call us fans.
Ohio St paid players, got caught, didnt dominate.
LSU paid players, got caught, didnt dominate.
USC paid players got caught, did dominate
Clemson paid players, didnt get caught, dominated for a stretch including during Saban's run
TAM paid players, didnt get caught, failed miserably.
Etc, etc, etc. Saban was far from the only one paying players. What he was, the very best at organizing and fulfilling the plan. Say what you want but it all leads to him being the best there ever was.

Nobody was more competitive than Saban was when he coached. You are mistaken if you think he couldn’t be successful in any era of football. He’s just old now.

Saban could do anything. He didn’t want to do it. He had nothing left to prove.
Saban recruited better than anyone because he outworked everyone and knew how to convince players he process got them to the NFL
with a bag of money, I bet he could do it
he's probably is age....programs started to negative recruit him "he's going ot retire before you finish college"
Lane is 50, he has 22 seasons to catch Saban!
