I feel like the pitcher conversion is in Jordan Thompson’s future at some point too.

Did Thompson come to LSU as a two way player? I seem to remember hearing something about Thompson pitching during his career. Braswell got some time early in his Carolina career, so that makes sense.

what you're likely remembering is that Jay recruited JT from a young age when he saw him first as a pitcher.

Not sure if this means we will have another grad assistant added to the staff at some point, or an undergrad assistant. But Ben Nippolt recently had a title change to ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT - POSITION PLAYERS. Him and Nik McClaughry have the same title.

We're finally seeing baseball staffs get almost to the same level as basketball staffs. Basketball has nearly a 1/1 player to coach ratio.

What's the over under on how many games before you give up on the team?

I put the over/under at 4. Not 4 games, 4 innings on opening night.

Question for Project or the group. The 2026 class is huge, right now 26 players. In the portal era I believed classes would get smaller since most of the portal players are plug and play. So why the big class? Is Jay trying to be less reliant on the portal? Is it because of the money that was thrown at his last class by MLB? Something else?

Project can correct me if I am wrong, but i believe the large 26 & 27 classes have to do with the CBA being negotiated on top of how the draft decimated the last class with the huge amounts of money. Project can give more details.

Yeah, we don't know yet how the CBA will affect the next couple drafts. 2026 draft could be affected by a lockout, 2027 could have a significantly altered format.

But I think it's an overall strategy to reduce variables year over year.

It's part "they can't possibly draft everyone." It's also just a fact that part of recruiting is getting the financial part lined up. The more players you need to line up financial pledges for, the bigger the overall pot. That means when it comes to getting a guy to pull out of the draft, the money is ready.

It probably didn't play out exactly like this but here's the most recent example: Landon Hodge started getting draft buzz and the indication was that he would be signable (by MLB clubs). Well, we knew any financials lined up for him could be apportioned to Serna to make sure we got a catcher to campus.

By increasing the overall pie size, it allows you to lock some guys up when everything starts to get real.

It's going to put us in the both the Draft Winners and Draft Losers category every year. We have like 12 top 100 2027 guys right now. If we get half of them to campus we will easily have the best "show up" class. But it will look like we got pillaged because we had 6 guys go in the top 2 rounds or some shite.

It also means that if those guys do make it to campus, they make it to our campus and not someone else's. And the more nebulous benefits of having LSU talked about a lot on the draft, on prospect podcasts, recruiting rankings, etc. The PR type stuff that's hard to measure.

ETA: Specifically on the class size thing: There still isn't a hard deadline on the roster cap because of the DSA part. And (if my numbers are correct) we have 55 guys for next year and 35 of them have at least some draft risk (roster and class combined).

also to add to that....transfers cost more money in most cases because they are proven plug and play guys. As much as possible we at to limit the amount we need every year. We want to take guys out the portal that can be superstars...not waste money on depth pieces. By taking large classes they are ensuring they get a lot to campus...if for nothing else, depth.

In most cases, especially with pitching, the kids they are recruiting are pretty much going to hit at a 90%+ clip. Now not saying some wont live up to the hype but we are no longer taking pieces like a Dylan Thompson or a Griffin Cooley that are more projects type prospects that are clearly not ready and have to transfer out quickly. Not saying some wont transfer out quickly but its not going to be because they are completely overwhelmed either.

I'm leaning toward former Tennessee commit Quinn Fitzpatrick on this one.
