At what point does a school just forego high school recruiting

And just put all money and time into the portal every year. You know that’s what it’s coming to

If you recruit right you shouldn’t need 35 players from the portal every season
You still need that base of players to build up

Hopefully never but who knows. Can’t be successful with bringing in 35 kids each year
This year is an outlier I think?.??

Have son who went thru HS football recruiting process the last couple of years. After having avid LSU recruiting interest for the last 20-years, in reflection, this will go down as worst time ever to have a son go thru HS football recruiting…
Transfer Portal
COVID year players
Dread reading your subject line but is fair question.
Son landed very well. But feel for many fellow Dads and Moms who have HS player prospects. Chit time.

I think it’s all about balance now. But the days of fighting for the number 1 class should be over. It’s wasted energy to worry about that now. To many of those guys will transfer out anyways. I do think you should focus on the offensive line in highschool recruiting though. Relying on the portal for offensive line is not the most ideal.

I don’t think we are that far off from that now. It pretty much takes anyone a year or two to get productive…..and then it is just a crapshoot. Why pay unproven kids millions upon millions of dollars?

They shouldn’t forgo high school recruiting, they should be more selective. Imagine not having Pickett or Berry last year.

Yea the high school players are going from getting paid to lucky if they get a scholarship. Why pay $$$ to an inexperienced player especially a QB.

Unfortunately, it isn't too hard to imagine not having Berry on the field last year.

I can see what might happen. Why spend $12mil on and Underwood when you can get 6 players for that with experience and proven skills. I think many of the HS millionaires are going to get squeezed out.
It is one thing to spend effort dollars to capture high star rated HS players but it is another when you spend payment dollars to a player without vetting their skills and abilities vs the competition level.

Kids have to go show their talent at smaller colleges.

I think we will still see intense recruiting battles for the elite HS players, ones expected to come in and contribute immediately.
The 3 star and a lot 4 star will get passed over by big schools and told to sign with mid level programs and develop for a year or 2 then get recruited out of the portal.

Aren't we about there now??

This is why quality of college football has declined overall

Same reason Lunch Box is still at UL.
Give him a full year down in the minors making ~$250k and transfer next year to a P4 school for ~$1-2m next year.

I think portal spending is more valuable than high school recruiting if most of these guys are just going to leave after a season.
Also, what's wrong with bringing in so many each year when the rosters are expanded?

HS kids can now sign NIL deals…. These deals are typically 2-3 years.

Just as the NFL looks to college players as their minor league, the top programs will treat lower level colleges as their minor league to bring guys up from.
I think the quality of players in the lower divisions or even conferences will actually improve because the Big Boys will be less likely to take a chance with a player with no college experience.

You need HS players for depth. It's easier to convince HS players to come and be backups than it is guys with 1-2 years of eligibility
