I’ll allow it. Not a balk.

Absolutely should have been a balk.

Balks with lefties can be tricky, and maybe my understanding of what is and isn't a balk is wrong but that absolutely looked like a balk to me.

I don't believe you can intentionally deceive the runner, and that crystal clear step towards home and throw to first seems like the text book definition of that. Nobody said a word about it though, so perhaps I'm wrong here.

I've seen pitchers deliver to the plate with less of a step toward the plate. That was absolutely a balk.

Well, you're allowed to be wrong, just like the umpire was

It is absolutely a balk albeit a subjective call sometimes. I called it when I saw it the first time. Speaking as a former ump for a long time, his step and hip was to home - deceiving the runner. Can’t do that. It’s a balk.

It is a balk. His right leg crosses his left leg. That is a key to go to home and that is why Braun took a lead.

That is 100% a balk.

Can't make that observation from the angle provided. It is very close.

I wish I could post a shot of the video at that point. His arse turns and his right leg is crossing his leg.

I’m fine being wrong if this is not a balk, but in what world does your front foot normally go in that direction when you’re throwing to first. That’s >90 degrees away from first. My 2 year old doesn’t even do that and she throws like a girl.

years ago it was called 95% of the time. Now it is prob less than 30%. I’d do it till they call it

Lefties are usually allowed to step towards the dugout in those pickoffs to 1st. Its rarely called a balk, but sometimes is.

Must be within a 45 degree angle to be legal. There’s a reason that’s called a “balk move”, puts it on the umpire to make a call

you have to watch the hip and knee deceive the runner. It is a balk. Watch it in real time and stop looking at still shots.
