Hunt told a story on air about Johnson thinking collins could have become the ace of his staff at zona before the injury. So apparently this is zero surprise to him.

Thompson scored the run Shores gave up. JT singled to lead off the second inning advanced to second and scored on a wild pitch that bounced out of play.

Thompson going 2-2 is gonna make the resident idiots upset, but I for one am happy to see his progress this year.

Shores hitting 98 in January is scary come May/June. For those like Project what do you project (no pun intended) him touching around that time when it’s warmer

Edit: Collins was the one from Zona working back from arm injuries correct? I liked what I saw from him last year, hope he can develop into a nice backend piece

Yes, Collins had arm surgery then a setback before getting to LSU. Been a long road back.

I don’t think we’ve ever had this many guys who can hit 95+. And I don’t think it’s close.

probably not gaining any velo due to warmer weather.

No doubt. LSU has never had this many power arms.

Even without Noot I think I count 9 guys now that have hit 95+ on the gun, with 5 hitting 97-98 (Skenes, Moffett, Shores, Floyd, Taylor). I’ve seen Little and Hurd hit 96 and then Money and Collins have hit 95.

Then you have a slew of guys around 93-94 like Dutton, Edwards, Hellmers, etc. Haven’t seen any of the lefties hit 95 yet that I recall. Primeaaux and Herring have hit 93 consistently.

Still waiting to see 100. Skenes hit 99 in one of the fall scrimmages, so it should happen at some point. Would be an LSU first unless Gausman hit triple digits. Don’t recall him doing that, but I could be wrong,

That's frighteningly fast.

I flinched READING it.

Before fall practice CJJ said in his opinion pitching might end up the strength of the team.

I mean that's a strong arse statement given our lineup.

Opening day and the 1st pitch can't get here quick enough. Should be a fun season to watch unfold, and see players - batting, fielding, pitching - play at an incredibly high level. If things go as expected that 3-game homestand vs Tenn in late March is going to be explosive and I would expect the Box to be electric.

Ackenhausen is the only pitcher that hasn't seen time yet, aside from the guys injured. Hopefully Ack is healthy. I have high hopes for him.

man its impossible for us to know because there could be something else they are working on

but in general at this level might see a 1-2mph bump but thats assuming he is able to maintain strength, weight, power, grip strength etc. just too many factors to project

FTR getting a kid from 75 to 90 is much easier than getting a kid from 95+ to 100. for most really good athletes, you can get them to certain strength benchmarks on them in certain exercises, build the stability in a couple different positions and put the weight on them and then pretty consistenly can get them to 90-92.

after 90, its very very specific to each individual

same with exit velo but its more 95+ it becomes individualized based on strength, mechanics, where they are weak on the strength-velocity curve etc

Something I find really interesting with Shores is that his K/IP is not what you would expect from someone throwing as hard as he is. During the fall he had 15K/17IP. Yesterday he had 2K/3IP.

Don't take this the wrong way either. I'm not saying this is a bad thing. A lot of weak contact is a good thing as far as pitch count and how far into a game someone could go. Just an observation I thought was interesting.

Hell yeah. It helps keep the bullpen fresh.

In the past 30 years college pitchers have gained about 10 mph on their fastballs.

Had a former teammate at MSU named Jay Powell. He was a 1st round draft pick in '93 that pitched in the majors for a decade of so.

At the time, he was considered one of the best fastball pitchers in college baseball. He topped out around 88-89 mph. These days the elite college fastball guys are throwing 98 mph.

Pretty remarkable.

To that point, speaks to how much of an outlier Big Ben was in the late 80's throwing 94-95 mph.

I think there is definitely a skill to getting 3 times through the order or into the 7th inning or later. I'm not a huge fan of overall trend of shortening starts and then throwing every reliever on the roster for 3 batters the rest of the game.

Longer starts and more multi-inning relievers. That's my platform for president in 2024.

Not only that, but you aren't seeing a ton of guys that are all velo with no control and no secondary. Because batters have also gotten better.
