So what you meant to say here is like baseball but not like football at all.

ETA A lot of the Ben Simmons blame lays on LSU....but it is clear from this article that Ben Simmons and his family were baby back bitches all along.

Firstly, the one-year rule is the NBA's rule.

Secondly, you're forgetting that 1-and-done players still get some value - they get to play in multi-million dollar arenas, get massive exposure via TV, and (in most cases) get decent coaching.

Now there's an argument about the inability of players to have a job in the off-season, but you can see where that would open the door to boosters paying a lot of money for non-existent jobs.

This is it right here.

You are not forced to go to college. You can go overseas or even just take the year off. Most of these guys aren't going to do either because then they won't be on ESPN twice a week and everybody will forget about them.

You really want to know how I feel about this? Keep it to myself, but wished I'd never heard of him.

No you go to college for 3-8 years to join the Philharmonic orchestra. What a terrible analogy.

My least favorite bb player of all time. Incredible skills for a man his size whose effort did not match his talent. Showed zero improvement from his first game and amazingly drew a pass regarding the failure of last year's team. Will prosper at the next level but will win little till he displays passion to succeed

I don't know why people -- especially Simmons, who certainly knows better -- insist on blaming the NCAA for this, as if the NCAA controls the NBA's rules.

Maybe Simmons is just smart enough not to bite the hand that is currently feeding him.

He isn't wrong though. It's a dumb system

For whom?

The rule is an NBA rule and presumably is in the best interest of the NBA to have these kids be 1 year out of high school.

The NCAA has nothing to do with this. What Simmons is displaying here is someone who has zero interest in going to school. He absolutely should have played somewhere else for money with that being the case. Nobody made him play college ball. To me, it's kind of dumb to decide to play in college with the rules known...and then complain about the rules.

WTF

He wasn't forced to play in college.

Nobody was stopping him from making money off of his name. He just couldn't do that AND play college basketball.

Does the NBA force them to go to college? Can't they just chill with a personal trainer or play overseas?

It's says a lot about Simmons that he couldn't put in more effort at LSU. He had other options. Why choose the college route if you're not going to at least try to have fun and take advantage of the opportunity. You're not going to be in the NBA forever kid, you need to plan for a career pst NBA.

It's puzzled me how this hasn't been adopted for basketball. It makes so much sense.

And this should make it clear as day to anyone who still had doubts as to whether or not Ben Simmons gave a shite about this team or its success last year. He didn't. And he walked all over the coach in the process. Would have been better for the program not to have even had him. I don't give two shits if LSU fans want to be able to gloat that we had a number one draft pick. He did nothing for the program. Good riddance.

I'm coming around to the idea that all sports should be club sports. No athletic scholarships. Hold open tryouts among the student body. Some professor does the coaching in his spare time because he likes doing it.

It's called an internship, and college kids have been doing it for forever.

He could have stayed in Australia for his senior year and gone straight into the draft. He CHOSE to come play in the US his last year of high school. He CHOSE to play college basketball for a year instead of another option.

Why did he CHOSE that path? Probably because it afforded him millions of dollars worth of marketing himself to his future employer and sponsors.
