Part of the reason they're discussing minority scholarships is because, while the NCAA allows each school to give 11.7 scholarships, most HBCUs fund only a fraction of those. What they're trying to do is not to give HBCUs a leg up on other schools by letting them sponsor more scholarships, they're trying to find funding for the scholarships they're already allowed to offer, but can't for financial reasons.
Thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea about that.

No problem. I learned about it a few years ago, and it's something that always annoys me. Coach Cador has done so much for Southern over the years, but they still won't give him more than about 6 scholarships to dole out. I think it would be a great thing if MLB would step in and say "hey, here's an endowment we're establishing strictly to give scholarships at schools that can't afford all 11.7."
I'd rather see it happen universally, rather than just at HBCUs, but it's a start.

Why the hell would a college baseball coach at Southern be invited, let alone attend that meeting??

Meeting with commish and other baseball execs and coaches about lack of minority scholarships in college baseball
How is there a lack of minority scholarships? NCAA scholarships are not allocated by race.
This is I understand a plan of MLB to cough up their money for special minority scholarships to get more blacks interested in baseball. Teams would get more scholarships paid for by MLB if they give them to blacks.

RC has probably done more to get black kids to play baseball than anyone else in history with the exception of Jackie Robinson.

Poor wording on my part, didn't mean minority scholarship, what I meant was funding scholarships for minority schools like Southern.

RC is a great coach and I always respected Southern somewhat for what he has done. Hope this meeting works out just so there is a level playing field, like another poster said I would hope the MLB would not only do it for HBCU but ohers like them.

Much less money for a pitching coach. Does he finally have one?
Being an advocate for HBCU and inner-city baseball may be a good retirement career for Coach Cador. Fernando (he's still there, right?) has head coaching potential, so I don't think he minds leaving the club for a while. When he had the health scare a couple years ago, Fernando stepped in and did a nice job.

Yeah pretty shitty post by that guy. Cador does everything he can to help out black people play baseball but he'll let anyone play baseball at Southern. black, white, hispanic, green, blue, gay...

Easy answer...there would never be such a meeting. If I elaborate any further I will be called a racist as you are about to be.
i'll elaborate and if people want to be ignorant and call me a racist then so be it. african american kids don't play baseball. they play basketball and football. there is a structure, esp in the AAU arena that pretty much locks black kids out of baseball, esp the very good athletes. i know there is a lot of whining how inner city areas have no ballfields and baseball needs expensive equipment (see dave winnfields book) and i'm sure that is true, but the fact is those fields would not be used if there were there; at least not for baseball. if black kids were to begin to actually like playing baseball and their AAU coaches were to actually allow them to play i'm betting they would be having a place to play and those with talent would get college scollies. also, does anyone know that baseball scollies ARE LIMITED IN NUMBER and therefore very few kids get a full one. in summary, a black kid has an environment where his own coaches prevent him from playing baseball and he can get a full scollie by playing the other sports. duh. i'm an old ball coach and EVERY time i tryed to get a black athlete on my team he was not allowed by his AAU coach or people that fancied themselves as his "handler". one coach said it was OK but he could only play if there was no basketball conflict which included practices. well, i said no. not only will granting special privileges to a select few players ruin the dynamics of the team, the kid just can't be prepared to play the game without having ever practiced.

Do they really need a meeting to know that "black kids" in general play football and basketball and the ones that do play baseball usually take the minor route instead of college? No racism, no conspiracy, just the way it is.
The kid might not want to go to college but instead go straight to work and for a baseball player that means minor leagues... Pretty simple if you ask me..
Now if there is a difference in scholarships for "black schools" and non-black schools then I guess that could be up for conversation. Of course I could argue what is the point of a "Black" university in the first place but that is for a different board...

RC is one of the greatest people I've ever met. He's not about color, he's about winning. I respect everything he has done for Southern and sticking with the Jags when big time programs like Notre Dame came calling.
He's a hell of a coach and even better man.
