The bolded part is exactly how every AD who wants to keep his job acts when coupled with the underlined part. If the folks above your head insist you do or do not do something, your only choice is to comply or lose your job.
From the little bit I know, Verge is no doormat, but he is practical in his approach; he has seen the positives and negatives of every AD LSU has had for the last 40 years.
Basketball has an entrenched behind-the-scenes power structure. Those guys still liked McMahon as of the end of last season. That, coupled with the BOS and Rousse possibly having money concerns(or at least concerns about the optics of the money flow), is probably why we don't positively know he is gone yet and why Verge is making statements that will give him wiggle room in either direction.

Verge has been around long enough to see how the game is played. He has also been around long enough that he is closer to retirement than many realize. The way state employee retirement pay is calculated is based on your highest three years of compensation. Verge has started those three years for himself. He isn’t going to mutiny against Rousse and the LSU Board of Supervisors and refuse to do what they want. He will find a way to make it work with Wade if that’s what the chosen direction is. Verge, more than Woodward and Alleva before him, is pragmatic. He isn’t going to let his idealism get in the way of doing business.
