I was looking into the camp for my boy who is 6, hasn’t played on a team but he’s interested in the sport.

This thread gives me hope for the future of boyhood, I hope my kids get the opportunities we had to frick around in our youth.

I had some fun times at that camp in the early 2000s. This isnt one of them, I was there when Wally passed, remember walking in and everybody had the old box lined with flowers outside.

We stayed at the hotel behind the gold club, remember a bunch of the players taking their money and heading out one night. Boys came to camp the next day drunk off their arse.

Went in 01, 02, and 04. They put us up in I wanna say either the Hampton or Holiday inn on College and we would take buses to another hotel for breakfast every morning.

McDonald’s Cheeseburgers or brown bag sandwiches for lunch everyday, room snacks and Domino’s for supper. We were living.

Met some good guys down there and struck up a camaraderie with Lane Mestepey. Good times.

Boots Garland on running

This guy! Ha. What a riot he was. I remember him being quite crusty and salty, but cool at the same time. He was a hell of a motivator because you would be scared of him.

I remember that he would often do the talk to the group in the mornings before we got after it. I remember him saying stuff like: “The National Pastime isn’t baseball… it’s transferral blame!! Everybody blaming everybody else for their own shortcomings “. Etc. lol. I was a kid, but I remember him pretty clearly.

Once, he had us on a running session where he explained how he wanted us to get into running form getting out of the batter’s box, and how he wanted us to run down to first base. So then he proceeds to watch us as we would take turns rubbing one by one. He’d bark orders, etc. One guy in our group did in fact have a little awkward running form. When this kid ran by him, Boots yells: “Who the hell shot this guy?!” lol

The Skip Bertman camp was the GOAT camp for sure!

I went to Skip's camp in the late 90s, like 98 or 99 or so and we went home every day. But we lived 20 minutes away so maybe they had some accommodations for the kids that came from further away, idk.

I went from the mid 90s through like 2001. They still had a boarding option when I last went

First year my roommate showed me that if you unplug the TV box in the Hilton and plugged it back in the porn channels were no longer blocked and somehow didn't charge to your room.

Very cool trick. I will try it soon.

I stayed at the Hilton back in the 90’s I remember the whole free porno too! Somebody was acting a fool on our floor Skip came down the hall screaming scared us all half to death. Won the championship on year our coach which was a player took us to hooters. Great times went 95-96 I believe or 96-97. Been a minute.

No more than ever but parents are pu$$ies these days. People say kids today have changed. They are wrong, kids haven’t, parents have.

I attended several years in the mid 80s. I still have that picture of me and Skip Bertman. We definitely spent the night. It was somewhere on campus, but I don’t remember where.

I went in 2000 and we stayed at the Crowne Plaza I think. Remember riding the buses and everyone singing Get Your Roll On non radio version acapella.

I'm pretty sure it was Boots but maybe someone else...

"I might have been born at night, but I wasn't born last night..."

I feel like he said that multiple times a day.
