I don’t think it’s working the count that is the issue. LSU for the most part put together pretty good ABs. They drew some walks & HBP and got guys on base pretty consistently.

Two things that were issues over the weekend, and there are reasons why you should not worry’s

1)The star players failed to get timely hits. Data tells us that there really aren’t patterns to this. Good hitters hit with men on base, bad hitters don’t. It will come full circle & balance out.

It’s under a microscope because LSU has a new coach, & because of the magnitude of the competition this weekends. Crews & Berry will not have issues driving in runs this year.

2)Secondly, the mass pinch hitting. Why is this not worrisome? Well, Johnson bluntly has said he was going to pinch hit early in games to give everyone a fair shake. Now, did I think he meant against Texas ? No, not really. But he didn’t waver from that.

To further my point, I think LSU will have a decent bench. One of the problems is, he has a lot of left handed hitters. And on a few occasions this weekend, got caught in a LH vs LHP matchup. Advantage: always the pitcher.

It’s also hard to come in the game cold & pinch hit. There is an art to pinch hitting, even DH’ing. Your involvement in the game is just different, your body feels different. These kids were in a tough spot against good pitching, coming into the game cold & trying to hit in close games.

The best way to extend starters? Extend innings yourself. And LSU could not get the big inning going, even though they were in position to in every game.

Any comments on the venue, was MM Park prepared and did you feel welcomed? How were the concessions, the crowd (any differences in OU, UT and Baylor fans?)
stuff like that.

Thanks, I'll hang up

diamond club seats were legit as was the full bar. food was meh. ballpark was really nice. fans were friendly. only went to the OU game. only saw the regular concessions after the LSU game. lines seemed long and some weren't open. staffing shortages?

Agreed on all counts.

Although I don't necessarily agree with the pinch hitting strategy thus far, I do understand the rationale. IMO, the next 5 games should be treated as a dress rehearsal for SEC play. Don't make any substitutions you wouldn't make in a conference game at the plate or on the mound. We need the guys who will be in there getting as many live reps as possible.

The official scorer for the Baylor game had to be a Baylor Alum. We only had 4, realistically should have had at least 6 and could have had as many as 8-10!

Jacob Berry has a tremendous bat. He obviously has to be in the lineup every night. However, he does not have a position. He is awkward in RF and at 3b. Seems like he may need to be DH. Can Jobert play OF?

You were doing good until this... stick to your day job. We have a projected top 5 draft player and you dont think we have a position for him.
Taking a player of this cali er and sticking him at DH is how you never get a guy like this in your program again...

My observations from attending all 9 games. Yes Houston was ready and we were well welcomed. Beautiful facility, friendly staff. Fans from opposing teams were kind and engaging for the most part. They did run out of beer and some food items by time LSU and Baylor played, but overall I had a great time and plan on returning the next time the Tigers are in Houston. Which won't be next year as the teams have already been selected. Only complaint was the food and drink were a little pricy but so goes for major league stadiums.

You forgot two

Crews was garbage during crunch time
Bianco was Hot Garbage at the plate

I suspect Crews would get better b/c he was AWESOME last year. Bianco not so much.

So what, you just live with the costly errors?
I know not all of his bad plays have been recorded as errors (the triple in Ruston), but is his bat actually out producing the runs that he’s responsible for?
I don’t know the answer, but I’m leaning towards no.

You put the players in the best position to win. If big recruits don’t want to come because they see Jacob Berry limited to DH, then they don’t need to be here.

It blows my mind that Baylor beat UCLA who then went on to beat Texas

I agree with this. I understand the whole LH/RH match-up philosophy - but to pitch hit with batters who are Freshmen or only have 1-2 AB's the entire season (when the game is still on the line) is baffling to me.

I agree to a certain extent, but didn’t he DH last year? He obviously loved Coach Johnson enough to come here so he apparently didn’t have much of an issue with it. Unless he was of course promised a position.

Yeah no that’s not how this works… you do what you have to in order to win games. Playing a player in a position where they are negatively affecting your team’s ability to win games because of promises is how you lose a locker room. Players know they have to perform.

Good post. Morgan saved a bunch of errors last season as well. I was hoping that problem would have been corrected but they still can’t seem to make simple throws to first.

Excellent assessment. I completely agree.

Sure would like to see the fielding issues get resolved quickly.

So, if I understand correctly, you are only interested in acquiring the good players and not actually putting them in the best position to help the team win games once you have them. Interesting logic for a fan who presumably prefers winning to losing.

This team really isn't much different than what we thought it was when the season started. The defense will be fine, Merrifield will settle down. Berry needs to DH. Thompson will be very good with some hiccups.
Hitting will be really good, but hitting tends to come in waves, not a steady flow.
Pitching is okay but we do lack quality starters. Money was a nice surprise, Coleman could be a big loss.
I know it is the Rant but it is too early and we have seen too little of a sample size to think this team is any different than what we thought it would be.

Dude Thompson is worse than Berry in the field. His bat is average. I can’t believe we have zero players on this team that can’t replace him. Routine ground balls last night and boots it, he can’t make a throw to save his life. How many errors does he have? Seems like almost half of them. He made a ton of errors last year. He’s definitely not a proven shortstop.

I think he has seven. Which for a season is not great much less 12 games.
