For the vast majority of people, this statement is false.

Most of us love college football more than professional sports. Why?

Because we watch recruits and hope they come to our school.

Then, we hope they develop and become big stars that help lead our team to championships.

We see them go through growing pains, develop their skills, and reach the mountain top.

We invest in season tickets, athletic gear, etc...

We want our teams to be successful.

And, we want the players to get what they deserve.

What we don't want, is to see the game transformed where each year, players quit to leave at the first sign of adversity. It creates havoc and chaos and it will turn people off to the sport.

So, it isn't that we don't want them to get big money. It is that we want some structure to it so that we can keep some semblance of order.

Otherwise, the game is going to suffer to an extent that many are just going to quit investing their time and money into it. Why do it if your all american player just leaves for greener pastures the next year?

Yep Some of these families are going to find themselves in a entirely different tax bracket then they are accustomed to. It also could mess up any scholarships based on income other family members have.

It's the players being paid, not the family. I would assume they're given enough advice to file independently. Where it will get tricky is when the college athlete gives the parents a house and a car with NIL money as a gift.

Exactly. What these faux-revolutionary dimwits don't grasp is that the entire mammoth popularity of CFB is premised on a very unique emotional bond between the fanbase and the school. Policies are now being implemented that attack and corrode that bond. When the bond is gone, the money will be gone as well.

What about my message indicates I can’t stand it? Good for them, but it’s fact that most 17yo kids don’t know a great deal about money or contractual obligations. I think that goes to a higher extreme when it comes to many of these recruits who likely don’t have any family members who have any experience in this world they are entering. Maybe you should come down off your high horse.

The government just like it is for every person that pays taxes. Im sure the schools have something in place to at least give them the knowledge but there will be people that mess up just like there are people that mess this up in every industry all over this country.

I agree. Lots of NFL guys talk about paying taxes for the first time and being shocked.

How come there’s never an outcry about how universities routinely exploit students (many of them from other countries) for free labor to gain research money that is way more plentiful than what athletics make. At most schools, athletics loses money. Obviously, the Alabamas and LSUs are self-sustaining but go look at most universities’ departments and you’ll find they lose money overall and depend on money from the general school budget to operate.

Yet, it’s all a fuss because athletes are “exploited.” They had a better deal than your average research student even before NIL.

Maybe we should take their scholarships away and let them use NIL funds to pay for school. Then I bet we see a sudden surge in scholarship appreciation.

I honestly haven’t even considered the target that these kids will be now with money in their pocket. Look at what happens to many of these guys their pro money comes in.

So why are we targeting the players in this case? Why are we trying to punish them because “fans” who have millions of dollars to pay players are paying them.

The fandom is what started this disaster. No one is going to quit watching the game because now it’s publicly known the players are getting paid on the side for their NIL. They’ve always been paid by boosters. It’s literally retarded to say it’s a “minor league” to the NFL when it has always been a minor league.

People were always going to do the unthinkable if it meant they could land a top recruit and win their school a championship. There needs to be tweaks to the transfer market but, adults should be able to make however much money they want through endorsements

Agreed. But hurt fans gonna dislike. But I'm a fan of football and the advancement of these athletes first.

This is next. You're opting out after our second loss of the season? Pull Scholarship and affiliation. That's also gonna cause issues with NIL. It's gonna be the wild wild west for a few years.

Damn strong. There has to be some sort of contract like the NFL. They can't just accept 100s of thousands of dollars or millions for signing with a team and then peace out the first time they get their arse in the air over something. Let them make money that's fine. But there has to be rules. It cant be like the wild west. Deep down you know that too.....you seem like one of the douches that puts limo tint on their windshields. I know that's random.....but you seem like that person

I had wished for a system where our young athletes could be given a meaningful stipend so some at some schools don't go without eating on Sunday nights or have the ability to take their girlfriend out for a burger and a movie. NIL is the right decision legally but it won't be long before college football will no longer resemble the sport we all love. Money will determine where athletes go & there will only be a handful of competitive teams and it will be the ones throwing money and lots of it at the athletes. I have a feeling that I'm not going to want to pay money to see that.

I remember a story relayed to me years ago from a big time acct partner from firm in MS. When steve mcnair was drafted his agent secured their acct firm to handle his finances and taxes. When they met with him and his family they discussed the contract and signing bonuses and the strategy to go about lowering his tax burden and what he had to pay to the govt. His mother was confused and questioned the accountant about why he had to pay the govt money? She said the govt sends out money at tax season. This is not meant as a joke but to show a window into the kinda environment alot of these kids come from and have no idea about taxable income and what tax bracket they have fallen into and the liabilities that come with it.

Players are entitled to have agents represent them in negotiations for NIL money, but these agents are restricted from representing them beyond that. Yea, right. As for paying taxes, NFL players are getting paid for marketing products by legit companies , all of whom report these payments to the IRS as company expenses. Do you really believe all these "agents" are reputable & following tax laws? Pro athletes go broke all the time; how long will it take for these "new rich" to burn through this income?

The school isn’t giving them the money, right? It’s a big time booster so maybe the booster should lawyer up and properly make sure any payments they make are contingent upon the athlete wearing the LSU brand/purple and gold. That’s business and that’s fair. But if, despite that, a kid decides he wants to go somewhere else, he can.
