29 wins 2018
40 wins 2019
15–2 shortened season
50 wins 2021
*if he remains at UT they’ll be back in Omaha next year

His track record as an assistant is a nice selling point as well. He helped build some monster classes at his previous two stops before UT

Once he arrives, give Vitello a short campus tour, have him shake a few hands, then take him somewhere to eat. Boom. He knows LSU.

Dang, y'all act as though Skip came here and started winning Championships immediately. It took him 3 years to make it to Omaha and he didn't win it all till he was here 8 years. Now y'all want someone to come in to LSU and win multiple Championships as soon as they get here and its damn near impossible to replicate what Skip did once he started winning. I know this is The Rant and this forum is for complaining but I'm beginning to think no matter who comes here, most of y'all will think it's a horrible hire.

But he's only been past regionals once. Cliff has gotten past regionals 3 times. You can argue whichever way want to. Like I said, all 3 will do well here. McDonnell is a clear #1. But, I like Godwin as my #2.

Apparently communicating that the program has high expectations is tough...for some of our fans and former players to imagine

Skip went 1-2 in his first trip to Omaha. Give the guy a chance.

Their pitching staff is light years better than ours

He was recruiting well at Mizzou too before he left there for TCU. 5 straight years with a first round pitcher I think. Aaron Crow, Max Scherzer, Kyle Gibson, etc

Just seems like on Dan we put feelers out and didn’t get the warm and fuzzies

I’m also not claiming one trip to the CWS is indicative of future success. Jay Johnson has been twice, with once being the runner up. None of that matters.

I would Be happy with McDonnel but he does have a 4-10 CWS record.
It’s not like he goes deep every time.
1-2
0-2
0-2
1-2
2-2
In his 5 appearances.
He took an absolute DOGSHIT program to the CWS in 5/13 years. The dude is a miracle worker.
I think he's the best candidate available. Good bit younger than Corbin, crazy success at a doormat program, and class act all the way around.
He is a Citadel grad as well and had his own success in Omaha:
quote:
An All-Southern Conference selection at second base in 1991, McDonnell led the Bulldogs in walks and stolen bases three times, twice led the team in runs scored and finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in stolen bases (99) and walks (185) … a member of the 1990 World Series team where he collected a hit in each of the Bulldogs’ three games in Omaha, McDonnell was a member of the teams that captured the 1990 and ’91 SoCon regular season titles, the ’90 league tournament crown and the ’90 Atlantic Regional, defeating host Miami twice … since graduating from The Citadel, he served as an assistant coach to Fred Jordan before moving to Ole Miss … has been the head coach at the University of Louisville since 2007 where he guided the Cardinals to the College World Series in ’07 and ’13.
McDonnell is easily my #1. I won't be mad at Vitello, but I want McDonnell. I think Godwin is #2 by a hair over Vitello, but basically tied.

I would rather have Vitello under achieving every season in what I expect Lsu to do which at LSU you win championships. With Vitello umm well he just gets to Omaha and gets his arse beat and has no control over his assistants. So yah that's my choice I like under achievers who have no control over their staff and team

He’s 2 games above .500 in SEC play for his career and has had one successful season. He maybe the right hire but the concern over his resume is legitimate because there’s not enough of it to determine whether he’s riding a special group or he has what it takes to duplicate it.
