80-81
31-5. Would have won it all had Rudy not split his hand on the backboard in the elite 8.

In some ways I have a particular fondness for the 1986-87 team. They really weren't that good, being only 15-13 (8-10 SEC in the regular season), but this team caught fire in the SEC tourney and made the Big Dance as a #10 seed, and beat #7 Georgia Tech, #2 Temple, #3 DePaul (a great team!) before losing late to #1 Indiana, who won the whole thing.

Ok-I went 9 years once, and missed ONE home game (1985 Tennessee). I've had a lot of favorite LSU teams. 1981, 1986, 1987, 1990,(any team with Shaq or Chris really) 2006 ETC. This team is right up there with any of them. 81 has always been the gold standard, and 86 was the most fun. But this team is as likeable as any of them in their own way.

People forget how close we were to back to back final fours.

Fair enough. I was going by memory. Nikita Wilson was also ineligible in 86 due to grades.

1986 Final Four team.
A little piece of me died in the upper deck or Reunion Arena that day.

The ones with Blanton and Redmond.

1986 for sure . There was nothing flashy about that team, 6’6” freshman Ricky Blanton playing center. They just gutted and gritted out wins like nobody's business

My favorite was that 05-06 team. That team played a good slate of OOC games. IIRC, they beat West Virginia in Morgantown. Lost a heartbreaker @ UCONN and blew a big lead against Ohio St. They figured it out by SEC play though going 14-2. With that OOC pedigree you felt they were already battle tested by the time the tournament came along.
Comfortable first round win against Iona (80-64)
Thrilling finish against aTm to advance
The Duke and Texas games speak for themselves. That run felt special because we knocked off Duke (the overall #1 seed) and then the #2 seed in our bracket.
When it came to the Final Four weekend, I honestly thought the title was ours for the taking. What a feeling.

quote:I'll take the team you skipped past- the Rudy Macklin/Ethan Martin team of the late 70's and early 80's. This was arguably the greatest team in LSU history, with 2 SEC titles in 3 years, 3 consecutive seasons losing to the eventual national champ in the tourney, a 17-1 SEC record and 30 wins the year they made the Final Four, and a 2 time first team All American in Macklin.
We are not known as a big basketball school but we did have flashes that were great. From the bob petit, pistol Pete, 1986 final four, Chris Jackson, Shaq, stromile Swift, and 2096 final four team. Also, it can be other teams that were not great like those teams.

The 1986 team was my favorite- and it’s not close. Ricky Blanton, Don Redden, John Williams, Oliver Brown, Anthony Wilson. Great guys, all of them!
