I'd put a few more potted plants out. Keep them out unil you are fined again and unit the ticket is due. Pay the 25$ fine, Wash and repeat.

If you don’t pay they can put a lien on your property… you idiots talking about not paying are forkin clueless.

that is completely true for things he truly owes like the assessment or any compliance fines.
I'm curious to know how it'd work for an unapproved/rogue special assessment.

shite like this is why I am really reluctant to ever buy a home in a HOA neighborhood

Frick HOAs. The Karen in power that harasses our neighbors drives around our (relatively small) neighborhood with her clipboard looking for every little thing to send letters out about. When the letter goes out it basically reads “fix this small thing or else we will hire someone to fix it against your will with a police escort and then bill you for the entire cost”. Like WTF?!
To OP, it really boils down to the legal documents and whether or not the HOA have legal standing to start demanding random money/fees from residents. This will likely take a lot of time to review and understand or hiring an attorney. I personally would look into it, first it was $1k, now it’s $3k, next it will be $5k

i won't live in one again, just personal preference, but they definitely have some positives to them. Pretty much the entire sole reason they exist is to maintain property values which I appreciate. I would rather not live next to someone wiht a pink house and their car on blocks in the yard.
As wiht most things, I think it all comes down to people. If your HOA baord is chill and laid back and recognizes it for what it's 'designed for, you practically won't even know you live in one. Then there's the people like guy above mentiond where you have some tryhard shithead (likely an old retired person) that thinks they're carrying out an issue of national importance and just takes the shite WAY too seriously. Those people can frick off

All of what you said is sensible and reasonable. The reality is, unfortunately, most HOAs are hellbent on power and nitpicking. I don't want to live in a neighborhood where you are legally bound to do whatever someone currently in power says. I would rather the pink house and car on blocks most days.

Something shady is going on with the lawsuit. I assume it is at least 50 rooftops in the area. That would be 200k for legal fees. There is no way possible that it is costing that. Someone is robbing yall.

Most days except those where you put out a for sale sign in your yard right hahaha!

It is nice to have an avenue to get some things cleaned up. We have a house down from us that just decided to park in the yard, street, and bring a box truck work truck home every night. About 12 people seem to live there.

They seem to have addressed that non sense.

First off - Stop paying
Second, Sue everybody for not disclosing the lawsuit when purchasing
Third, walk around the neighborhood with a bat. Hit it in your hand while looking disgruntled at the neighbors.
Fourth, none of this is legal advice. Contact a lawyer

I think a lot of people over value what positive impact an HOA has, honestly. Probably to make you feel better about the fact that you have no control over your own property to do what you please.

The only thing you HAVE to pay is your annual assessment, and anythign else that is disclosed in yoru governing docs (like an amenity fee, or a transfer fee at closing, etc). That $1K was likely a special assessment which has to be voted on and approved. The 3 or 5 board members can't jsut say "oh btw everyone now owes an extra thousand dollars".
Depends on the Covenant agreement and the powers granted tot he board
i served on an HOA board years ago reluctantly when a bunch of old karens where running and decided to be a counter voice. ( thankfully we had 3 level headed members vs a Karen and Daren)
our covenant agreement charged the HOA board with making a budgetv and then accessing the fees based on that budget. some years we- went under the $250/yr target some years we went over. depending on the budget.
when i started we had 20% of the neighborhood in none payment some 4+ years, so we had to increase the budget to file liens. we sent letters statign they would be liened if they didnt pay, and they would be billed for the lien fees as well. (in Louisiana HOA is right behind the primary mortague company on liens, and can actually do forced foreclosures (in extreemsituations) after getting people to start paying dues were then lowered to a reasonable level.

I can't imagine any scenario where I'd ever live in an HOA again.
The last one was corrupt to the core. Ultimately they were sued, removed, and we had a temporary board installed until a legally elected board could be formed.
The crooks did all kinds of fun shite. They mandated $400 mailboxes from a specific source, and residents learned one of the board members was the source.
One of the board members lived next to the tennis courts and didn't like the noise. So the board voted to plow the tennis courts under, with the information that they couldn't rebuild the courts without costly soil stabilization. They thought our swim and tennis community would prefer an outdoor kitchen to tennis courts.
It was a real clusterfrick between that and the other tedium. Pine straw is not acceptable, you must use xyz mulch. Trash cans must be brought back to house and out of view by x time. They tried to enforce that cars must be in the garage, but had no way to figure that out for families with more than a couple cars. Oh yeah... I enjoyed when they commented on things on the BACKSIDE of our house. frick you, HOA.

Homeowners stuck with the bill for a meritless lawsuit should start mentioning "breach of fiduciary duty" often when around the board members who voted to pursue the suit.

Without the state, a link to the appeal, or the contract with the hoa, you're wasting everybody's fricking time.
