That’s very debatable and if it is a net negative, it’s only because the government allowed Wal-Mart to game the welfare system
I like how when you mention welfare on this site someone is quick to scream that farmers are welfare queens but the lady taking up the handicapped spot in the Escalade is “underprivileged”. Getting an ebt card is my dream pretty much

Growing up in the south the only jobs you know that exist are government, plant, or some form of sharecropping. When you get to lsu they offer 4 types of degree: government, plant, share cropping, and sell insurance degree. Nobody ever told me I could be a tech bro and make computer programs that destroy the fabric of society or be a finance bro and hollow out America through mergers and acquisitions
WTF

It’s all where you live. In LA or NYC, more people make $800,000 or more but that’s like making $300,000 in Baton Rouge.

People wonder why things cost so damn much.
I know that there are a lot of salesmen here, but I have always thought it to be ridiculous the income that you guys make for selling someone items that they already need. I also read about how you wine and dine them and so on.
My best year ever was this last year and it is right at 1/3 what you made in 2022.
I say it all the time, "I'm in the wrong business."
I have literally, yes literally taken part in saving 100s, if not 1000s of lives over the past 24 years and make nowhere near the money you guys make.

In sales, it's feast or famine in many cases. That's the crappy part about it. I do find sales people generally hold more cash for a rainy day that salaried people on a good income.

Young people:
If there are not stock options, do something else.
Work will not love you back.
If you want a friend, get a dog.

While you have a job that fills a valuable need, a society is not going to make nurses (assuming that's your occupation) be top 1% earners.
The risk/reward equation is real. As others have said, the way to make that much money is to own your own business.
Salespeople in higher end sales roles are similar to that in the risk and reward. I'm in the software consulting industry, and I see salespeople kill it by making a huge sale once every year or so. it's a long sales cycle in this industry, so it takes some balls.

Lost a couple mil on the stock options on the first one because they weren’t all vested and I sold them as the vested. Made a good amount but it was a reset on retirement.
New one should be really good and I’m not selling
The first one I thought I needed the money and now I don’t need the money. Makes a big difference when you’re looking at a big pay out now vs a huge payout later.

You aren’t factoring job security. People in healthcare delivery are unlikely to be laid off and if so can easily transfer to a new role.

Asterisk is stock options by a certain level in the organization. My company doesn’t offer until Director+

West Virginia has no cities. Try to fly there. Better yet, how many people do you know that have gone to West Virginia in the past year.

The Greenbriar in WV is full of 1%, more like .5%.

My company used to offer them to operation managers and GM’s and up. My wife got options and restricted stock but I just got restricted stock as a sales rep. Once the stock got over $150 a share they started to not give it out as much as when it was $32 a share.
I no longer get shares at all but instead I get a 5k bonus vs 100 shares at $815 a share. I’ve hit my bonus 10 years in a row and it went from 100 shares then to $7500 in shares then to 5k cash in check.
Man I miss those share bonuses

Cleared 800 once. It was amazing. Now about 300-400. Still good, just not 800.
On pace this year for combined over 600k (before taxes). We are taking extended families to the Bahamas (Baha Mar) over fall break. It’s both a good feeling to earn that type of money and even better to be able to do something like this trip, especially for our parents who aren’t getting any younger or mobile.

Baha Mar is a great place but it’s not cheap

Yeah we went last year and just the wife and I spent a few thousand eating and drinking for a week. We are going back next year and I’m kinda bummed because it’s so close together but work pays for flights, 3 nights and $1000 in spending credit so we only have to pick up the rest if we want to extend for a week.
