A couple of Syracuse coaches come to mind with Dick MacPherson and Paul Pasqualoni. The program had a lot of success with the two of them.

Snyder is at the top of the list for me.
Similar style of coach to Tom Osborne. The buildup in relation to the circumstances with KSU is one of the best ever in my opinion.
Gary Patterson and Barry Alvarez also.
And Petersen with Boise State and Washington.

Don Nehlen. 1993 National Coach of the Year in leading the West Virginia Mountaineers to their second undefeated regular-season in six years (11-0 in 1988 and 1993). He retired from coaching in 2001 with an overall record of 204-121-8, making him the 17th winningest coach in college football history.
Yeah those WVU teams came OUT OF NOWHERE those seasons just had the misfortune of playing two legendary squads in those bowls in addition to getting boned by the pollsters in 1993 when they kept FSU in the top 2 after they lost to Notre Dame

That and thr bad luck of Major Harris getting injured in 1st quarter against Notre Dame.

Love him or hate him Brian Kelly is a winner at all levels. Massively successful coach.

Mark Richt if he isn’t already

He had a great run at Georgia. It seems every year he had the Bulldogs ranked in the top 5 at some point.
His legacy would be completely different if he coached in the playoff era, especially this new 12 team format.

I think Fred Akers may be the winningest coach at Texas % wise, but no NCs.

Virginia Tech wasn't a garbage program when Beamer arrived in 1987. They had the 30th most wins in college football history at that time (according to the excellent Stassen website).
That probably has a lot more to do with the fact that they have had a football team since 1892 than them being any good because they were not.
Virginia Tech record 101 seasons without Beamer (.511) - 275-248-15
Virginia Tech record 93 seasons before Beamer (.506) - 221-201-15
Virginia Tech record 8 seasons after Beamer (0.535) - 54-47-0
Virginia Tech Record 29 seasons with Beamer (.659)- 238-121-2
In 29 years, Beamer won more games than VT had in the previous 93 years.
Beamer has 19 of 33 8-plus win seasons, 15 of 20 9-plus win seasons, 13 of 14 10-plus win seasons (the lone other was the year after he left), and all 6 11-win seasons.

K-State, on the other hand, was probably the worst major power conference program in D1 history before Snyder got there.
Yeah, Snyder was taking over a much worse program. They Had not won a game in 2 seasons and had won just 2 over three previous seasons.

With active coaches, that'd be a much different list. Coaches at different phases of their careers. Some that may win one at some point.
I was thinking of it applying to retired, or at least inactive coaches. Although, it seems Patterson may get back in at some point.

Good example. Manhattan KS is not exactly a nice place to live. How about Barry Alvarez?

I'm biased but Gary Pinkel had multiple Top-5 finishes with a roster of 2-3 star recruits. Put a heck of a lot of them into the NFL too.

I’ll give a hat tip to Rich Brooks. I don’t think he ever received the credit he deserved for the job he did at UK. Inherited a program that had been decimated by NCAA violations and turned them into a very respectable mid-level SEC program. Took them to three straight bowl games for only the second time in school history. Also has a Rose Bowl at Oregon on his resume.

Mike Leach. His air raid really changed the course of the college game. He won in places where it isn't easy to win at. He belongs in the Hall of Fame

Great coach, and didn't he come back to coach a second time in Manhattan?

It does, shows he won with things more even for his team lol. He was also at Central Michigan, Cincinnati, etc. schools that he made relevant in the sport while there. Great coach.

That's remarkable to me honestly. They had one conference championship in the 90 years before Beamer arrived. Much less a national championship.
It is true they didn't dominate the conferences they were in, but they were also independent from 1965 - 1990.

.
This might be true, but remember, I was responding to someone who said VT was one of the worst major power programs in D1 history at the time Beamer took over. That's objectively incorrect.

Michigan fans worship Bo. He never won a natty
This feels like the time I found out MJ’s game winner over Elho was in the first round. I was under the assumption we didn’t count those bc of the media and retarded MJ fans.
