He definitely revived Kentucky after the anemic Bill Curry era.

His 98 team was heading for a special season until a DUI crash killed one of their guys and hurt another. It took the sails out going into the UT game.

Claude Bassett sunk that program and truth is, the Air Raid concept would have attracted some decent skills guys without the shady recruiting

He doesn't have Mike Leach as his OC anymore.

Peyton Manning vs Tim Couch

Tennessee vs Kentucky 1997

I think they passed for a combined 1200 yards that game.

If you read Leach’s book, it was Leach who pushed Mumme to get the better jobs. Mumme was fine at Iowa Wesleyan or wherever they were back in the day.

I spent some time with Mumme when he was at SLU. He was good guy, but a little different in an odd way. Also, after Mumme left SLU, Jerry Glanville wanted the job. SLU wanted to get someone who might stay more than 2-3 years at the time though.

Absolutely. It was a magnet school that all students had to pass a test to be accepted.

That said, after the Mumme wannabe failed, a new guy came in and ran the wing-T and made the playoffs. If you have shitty players then throwing the ball all over the place is a horrible strategy

Good hire considering centenary is brand new back at football and looking for ways to grow the brand regionally.

He's 73. Not ancient, but pretty damn old to still be at it.

Some folks commenting on him being difficult to work with. Like Leach, he's just different and was never the prototypical coach. Someone that goes against the grain as much as that never really gets embraced. Leach was only able to do that because of his peculiar, yet amazing personality and the fact that he produce wins in places that were college football wastelands.

I would have guessed he is older than his actual 73 years.

Closer to a ... Centenarian.

I was lucky enough to work for Mumme, in my time around him he was tremendous. An unreal guy to be around, god bless him for still being in coaching.

I still have trouble thinking of football at Centenary. I’m stuck on Robert Parish and Centenary basketball…
