Hmmm…interesting. If that’s the case, when do you foresee MSU making that announcement being that LaTech already confirmed their conference change for ‘26?

The fee for moving from FCS to FBS happens to be $5 million. I suspect that’s where the money is going.
Anyone else think McNeese will be unable to compete at the CUSA level? Take out 2 years of Will Wade and they haven’t exactly been lighting up the Southland. I guess they expect Matt Viator to bring back the good old days?

McNeese

Biggest over inflated ego athletic program in the state. They occasionally are relevant in the SLC and act like they are #2 behind LSU.

Moving to FBS would be a death sentence for their football team, and basketball and baseball will be bottom tier in CUSA.

Softball: Can compete
Men's BB: Can compete, if the NIL funds keep flowing.

All other sports: No. The football team hasn't won a playoff game in 22 years. Got a couple of first round byes, but no wins.

I think it’s a terrible idea but I think there’s enough of a contingent that sees schools that McNeese used to compete against like Marshall, Troy, UCF having “success” at the FBS level and think they are missing out.

Honestly I think they missed the boat. Had they moved up in the late 90s early 2000s it might have made sense but the football program is a shell of what it was and while baseball has been solid it remains to be seen if basketball was a flash in the pan.

As a fan that went to almost every game in the 90s and early 2000s, they need to stay in their lane
It’s crazy how awesome that atmosphere was in the mid to late 90s hosting quarter and semifinal games on ESPN

That town was rocking. They have to figure out how to navigate NIL and get back to those days and competing in the southland before even thinking about FBS.

I’d much rather be a competitive FCS team with a chance of hosting playoff games versus being like UL Monroe and once every 10 years going to a low tier bowl game. That’s not going to get the fans riled up.

They never fully recovered after the hurricanes and have had three or four coaches in the last eight years.

Get some stability and winning and the fans and money will come back. You don’t need FBS.

Softball is at best going to be the 4th best team in the state as long as Fremin is at SLU.

They may get 1 more year of NIL boost for basketball but it's not going to last with Wade. They took some of that and dumped it into women's BB too poaching essentially the entire SLU coaching staff and team from last season.

I will give them credit for having a fantastic AD and president, but the economics just don't work these days for moving up without stupid financial backing (see: Coastal Carolina and JMU).

Coastal subsidizes athletics at a rate of $3,634 per student:

The data, pulled from Sportico’s College Sports Finances Database, which obtains its information from public records requests, showed that CCU students at $3,634 paid almost 500 dollars more for athletics in the 2023 fiscal year than the second-highest paying FBS school — fellow Sun Belt Conference member South Alabama with an athletic subsidy of $3,143 per student.

And James Madison charges a $2,456 per semester fee strictly to support athletics:

Both of those mean tens of millions of extra dollars for those G6 athletic programs.

They need a new athletics name fast, UTRGV does not roll off the tongue at all.

I’d be pretty pissed at a $2,000 athletic fee. $200, don’t mind paying. But to hell with two grand.

That's my point, it takes a monster commitment to make the transition viable. Could McNeese get that commitment from the student body? I get they have a big NIL bump right now but at some point it fades out. They may have a dedicated alumni base to keep it up, really don't know, but if not things like student fees are needed.

Of course not. In Louisiana, students have to approve those types of fees. Would not pass.

Our Sun Belt teams have the same problem.
