Laz Diaz is another good pick for worst umpire. Saw him do the Twins Rangers on Sunday and wanted to boo right away

As someone who has worked as a primarily fast pitch softball umpire with some baseball sprinkled in, I’m usually last to jump on umpires for bad calls/incorrect rulings.
But his actions and attempted power plays off the field and screaming he has been overlooked because of his heritage are things I can’t tolerate in a person.

I guarantee he got a golden parachute from the union on the way out bc he’s way too stubborn to just straight retire early.
I’m still skeptical everytine I read it but apparently he’s really liked by the the other umps and they gladly have protected him

If I were a team owner I would take on guys like Hernandez and Joe West head on and have my team get thrown out one by one and be willing to forfeit to force MLB's hand to better manage umpires and break the most ridiculous union in sports.

When the Wall Street Journal runs a story about how crappy an umpire he is, it shows you that something's wrong. That came out on May 24. I wonder if it pushed him over the line.
Some of his peers in that story went overboard on how fine a man he is off the field, he's apparently actively and seriously involved in a whole bunch of charity work, etc. And for most of his career his numbers were not abysmal as far as accuracy and errors.
But his peers also noted that his fatal flaw was that he couldn't handle being questioned or argued with really at any point in his career. And an umpire can't be a doormat, but if you can't handle being questioned or argued with you have no business on an MLB field.
Plus they noted his inconsistency, especially calling strikes.
And his accuracy numbers did go to crap later on when IMO he was just out there trying to prove a point.
