I'm sad. 65 is far too young.

It was cool to see him at a Sounds game a few seasons ago as the opposing team first base coach.

He got a loud cheer when they announced him.

Godspeed Mr. Henderson.

If Rickey Henderson never stole a base he'd still be a Hall of Famer. Great base runner (obviously), but super underrated as a hitter. The man lived on base and had decent pop in his bat to boot.

He was also one of the super rare players who batted righty and threw lefty. Worst possible combination to try and make it as a position player. I always thought that was fitting for someone like Rickey

Damn. That sucks. Not good to see sports heroes of the 1980s start dropping off.

1980 was 44 years ago

44 years from now is 2068

Bowling for Soup recorded the song 1985 reminiscing about someone stuck in the mid 80s in 2004.

If they released the same song today they’d be singing about the year 2005.

Yep, I still can't believe Joaquin Andujar and Bruce Sutter are gone. Hell, Darrell Porter for that matter, but he was fighting off demons for a long, long time.

Wow! I met him during the spring of 1989 when the Yankees played at Grambling. So cool and laid back.

He also at one time had the record for lead off home runs in a career. Not sure if that’s still the case. He was a great one. I bumped this because every thread is about the CFB playoff.

Rickey is one of if not the biggest unicorn of all time in any American sport. No modern player played the game like him. He is 500 stolen bases ahead of number 3 all time. 500 stolen bases makes you one of the 40 best base stealers of all time. He has a career .401 obp. He is the all time leader in runs scored.

He has 3 seasons of an .obp of .398 or higher with 100 stolen bases. No other modern player to my knowledge combines that .obp in a 100 sb season. He stole 50+ bases with a +.400 obp NINE fricking times! Nine. Ichiro did that zero times. Joe Morgan the only other player remotely close with five such seasons

His 1983, 1985 and 1990 season are just absolute wrecking balls of offensive baseball.

If prime Rickey was on your team you were competitive. And it was a long prime.
